Brown Ale - Imperial Special Out of Production
Score

The first beer brewed for the barrel aging program and has been brewed every year since. Originally named after an experimental variety of hops but now brewed with US grown Fuggles which are earthy and resinous. A lean, simple barley wine brewed to showcase barrel flavors with massive bourbon barrel notes that morph as the beer warms in the glass.

(Bottle, vintage 2017) Cloudy brown colour with frothy tan head. Malty, roasty, hoppy nose with caramel, rye bread, chocolate, resin, orange peel and a touch of alcohol. Malty, roasted taste with notes of caramel, crisp-bread, chocolate, bourbon, vanilla, oak wood, resin, dried orange peel, a touch of dill and a vinous and warming finish with a balanced resiny bitterness. Full body, quite sweet. Really tasty and complex with lots of layers: toasty malt, bourbon wood, resiny hops. Great beer.

Bottle. Pours a clear brown with a small white head. Aroma is intense vanilla and bourbon, caramel, malt. Big body. Flavour is malty, quite sweet, loads and loads of vanilla, oak, caramel, molasses, biscuit malt. Crazy barrel notes here, this is so full on vanilla and oak, the original brown ale is somewhat lost. Nevertheless an amazing beer if one likes barrel aged beers.

2017 vintage bottle. How have I not rated this yet? Murky copper colored pour, a few bubbles. Boozy aroma, dark malts. Taste is sweet and nutty followed by a rising burn. Some raisiny elements also. Superb!

355ml bottle. Cloudy, minimally redd-ish, chestnut colour with small, frothy, half-way lasting, minimally lacing, off-white to beige head. Sweet-ish, nutty malty aroma, notes of hazelnut, some Brazil nut, nougat, a touch of tobacco, whiffs of Bourbon, vanilla, resinous and fruity hoppy hints of dried fruit, resin. Taste is initially sweet-ish, nutty malty, later more and more caramel malty, initial hints of hazelnut and nougat give way to toffee, caramel, vanilla, and well integrated, warming alcoholic Bourbon layers, some dried fruit, resin, fig, a slightly dry, oaky counterpart antagonises the sweetness. Oily to viscous texture, smooth and soft, minimally cloying palate, minimally coarse carbonation. Rich and passably complex, would appeal to me more with less booze.

Bottle thanks to wombat23. Aged two years down in the cellar and opened on Thanksgiving 2019. Brown with a frothy head that soon fades. Aroma full of whiskey, oak and toffee. Taste is mildly sweet. Boozy, whiskey-filled finish—a touch raw at the end but still quite pleasant. Body to the heavy side of medium. Probably too much barrel for my normal taste but this worked well after a heavy meal.
