Buzzard is a traditional dark ale brewed with pale, crystal and chocolate roasted malts and Herefordshire hops. Deep copper red in colour with the roasted chocolate malt giving a dry nutty flavour with hints of amaretto biscuit. The finish in the mouth is a dry smoky smooth finish.

On cask at Acorn Inn, pours a deep dark amber / mahogany with a small beige head. Aroma brings out bready malt, dry caramel, and toasted malt. Flavour is along the same lines, with bready malt, a touch of caramel and even lighter toffee. Bready, creamy, dry palate. Solid.

Handpull cask at the Pilgrims Progress (JDW), Bedford. Dark brown with notes of mahogany. Smell of milk chocolate, some muted forest fruit, gentle malt. Taste is not so good: sweet but also medicinal and herbal with a note of watercress. Some stone fruits in the aftertaste with a hint of liquorice. Creamy mouthfeel. Messy but passable.

Bottle from Ales by Mail. Clear brown with an off-white head. Aroma is sweet, malty, caramel, light chocolate and a little sour malt. Flavor is medium sweet and moderate bitter. Dry and moderate bitter finish. High carbonation for a bottle conditioned English beer and probably slightly infected. 230415

Bottle at an oil conference of all places! It pours deep brown with a thick, foamy light tan head. The nose is woody, earthy, treacle, cocoa, light burnt notes and dark fruits. The taste is bitter, earth, wood, treacle, dark fruit, leather, mild astringency, blackcurrant compote and dirt with a bitter, woody finish. Medium body, moderate carbonation and foamy mouth-feel. A sipper if anything. An acceptable old ale, but it didn’t exactly blow me away.

Dark, clear red pint with a frothy off-white head. Smell is very faint and slightly sweet. Taste is malty, nutty and has a very light aniseed (I think) edge to it. Quite a malty finish.

500ml bottle. Wonderful clear ruby red colour with huge, frothy, rapidly diminishing, subsequent almost creamy, fairly lasting, off-white to beige head. Herbal and spicy aroma has notes of dark berries and shrubs, Maggi, a nuttily touch, and, yes, hints of amaretto biscuit. Taste is dry, hints of dark fruit parings, grapes, sour cherries, a touch of roast, spice (Maggi), a touch of amaretto in the finish. A bit like an autumnal walk in darker regions of the forest, dark, spicy, and with prospects of things starting to moulder.
