A rich, dark beer packed with intense flavours of chocolate and spicy liquorice. This style of beer was very popular in London during the 18th century and can trace its roots back to 1720. It is brewed with charred malt and English hops to give a truly unique flavour.

500ml bottle from Sainsbury’s. Very dark brown with a fair amount of carbonation. There’s a lovely thin layer of light tan head. Liquorice dominates the nose, but there is some black coffee and raisin as well. Taste starts quite sweet - again very liquorice-y - but turns to a bitter finish with some gentle hops. Long lip-smacking finish. Medium body. Fairly standard porter but done well.

Bottle. Appearance - close to opaque black with a decent fawn head. Nose - coffee and dark chocolate. Light smoke. Taste - general mocha thing going on Palate - close to medium bodied with a creamy texture and a fairly good finish. Overall - better than expected.

Bottle. Dark brown body with a thin beige head. Aroma of cocoa powder, chocolate and Twiglets. Flavour of liquorice, chocolate and roasted malts. Thin body with a watery texture. Light fizz. A bit thin and weak but the aroma is nice.

Casi negra. Escasa espuma. Aroma tostado con notas de café y vainilla. En boca equilibrada y muy bebible. Malteada, tostada, chocolate y algo espaciada y ahumada. Final seco y moderadamente amargo.

Clear, dark, red-brown beer with a thick, beige foamy head. Malty, spicy smell. Flavour is smoky malt and light, sweet chocolate. It’s ever so slightly watery in the mouth but it’s a perfectly serviceable porter.

Bottle from Sainsbury’s, Salford. Despite the clear glass bottle (and spending a year in the personal beer cellar), the taste and texture does not seem to have been compromised and this is a punchy porter with a milky roasted malt nose and a slightly grittier than this taste. Almost black with a bubbly head.

500ml bottle at home. Pours near-black, big bubbly beige head. Light roast and chocolate aromas. Taste has a little more chocolate, slight metallic note. Sweet finish. Quite light bodied and thin. Not bad, not great.

500ml bottle from sainsburys. Not sure about this one. Deep almost black colour. Certainly not a big ago a bit roasted malts. These are also in the taste. Ok but not great.

Clear 500ml Bottle: BBD May 14, poured into an Abbot Ale glass tankard during Nov 13 and shared with no one. Pours a pleasant black shade, with a full foaming blanket of tanned bubbles. The smell was over roasted malts, which gave coffee and dark chocolate notes and a hint of what was to come taste wise. Sure enough, malted chocolate and coffee feel to the flavour, slight bitter finish to each sip, but the hops kept a low profile throughout. A long way from sweet, but it wasn’t sour either, just a regular Porter, if a little thin in body depth.
