A rich, dark beer packed with intense flavours of chocolate and spicy liquorice. This style of beer was very popular in London during the 18th century and can trace its roots back to 1720. It is brewed with charred malt and English hops to give a truly unique flavour.

Bottle at home from Sainsburys. Clear bottle. Aroma is socks, some skunky veg hops, choc and roast. Dark Caramel / red pour with a thin beige head. Flavour is a bit stale, solid roast. Slight rusty penny in the finish. Palate is light but a nice dry finish.

Bottle from Sainsburys :-) Poured a deep mahogany with a broken tan head. The aroma is earthy peat leading to a medium bitter flavour with roasted malts and a little chocolate on the watery, but refreshing palate. Drinkable at any time of the year.

Bottle. Cocoa nose, minerals, light coffee. Nice cocoa flavor with coffee, minerals, burnt wood. Rather thin and light, but roasty and bitter. Nice enough stuff, though a bit light and watery for me.

Bottle from the Cromwell Road Sainsbury’s. Pours very dark brown with a slight tan head. Nose is mild chocolate. Med minus body. Stiff carb. Flavor is smooth roast/dark/burnt malt with some chocolate. It’s dry and reasonably bitter in the finish.

Bottle unsurprisingly from Sainsburys. Black pour with a light tan head. Roast malt aroma with raisins and dark chocolate. Raisin, dark fruit, raisin and licorice flavour. Quite dry. Not bad.

Röstiger Antrunk mit trockenen, leicht schokoladigen Noten. Die Röstnoten bleiben mild, aufkommende Bitternoten sind ab dem Mittelteil im Vordergrund, was sich auch nicht mehr ändert. Durchaus in Ordnung. 11/9/8/8/9/8

Bitter chocolate and sweet, spicy liquorice are present in the aroma. Flavour is warming and has some sweeter port-like characteristics. Nutty aftertaste.
