A rich, dark beer packed with intense flavours of chocolate and spicy liquorice. This style of beer was very popular in London during the 18th century and can trace its roots back to 1720. It is brewed with charred malt and English hops to give a truly unique flavour.

Bottle at home in London with Chris. Pours clear, dark brown with a small, off-white head. Dark malts on the nose with hints of cocoa. Slight lactic sweetness in the flavor, some faintly roasted malts, very light earthy bitters. Light bodied with fine carbonation. Finishes slightly tangy with that lactic bit, some faint char, very faint dark fruits. A decent beer overall, though lacking a little in the complexity department.

500ml bottle from Sainsburys. Well what can I say about yet another Sheps pasteurised beer in a clear bottle that I havent said already? Well I like Sheps smaller brews over the past few years. The head brewer has actually produced some decent berrs. This has a decent roasty aroma with some good dark fruits too. Blackberries and blackcurrants. The body only suffers a little from the light pasteurisation. The finish is surprisingly decent. I rather like it. The choc the fruit the finish. Decent

Near black, with a hint of red when held up to the light and billowy, momentary tan head. Aroma of strong black coffee, bitter chocolate and a hint of dark fruit. Flavours of liquorice, more chocolate and charred malts, leading to a very dry, burnt finish. Enjoyable.

500ml bottle from Sainsbury’s, Kidlington, Oxon, consumed 15.10.10 Pours dark conker brown with some red highlights and a large frothy beige head. Quite a dry stout though there is some underlying sweetness (just) Plenty of big roasty bitterness, in fact this bitterness really sticks around for a while. If I had a criticism it is that it’s a little thin for the strength, in fact its quite challenging as well, though I rather like it. A6 A5 T7 P3 Ov13 3.4

50cl bottle from Sainsburys, Bracknell. Deep reddish magohany in colour with a dense coffee coloured head; malty aroma with some light chocolate; medium body and a silky texture; nutty milky chocolate malts; and a dry finish. Very pleasant.
