Late in November of 2011, Mike Rodriguez our head brewer asked about creating a Coffee and Cacoa Nib version of Serpent’s Stout for the San Diego Strong Ale Festival. The beer was a hit with our fans. When we wrote up the syllabus for the Ultimate Box Set, we knew a version of this beer would be included. We waited until the very end of the release schedule to put this beer in a bottle so that the coffee and cacoa nibs really come through. Four Bourbon barrels were selected for their rich and dense chocolate flavors. One week before packaging, we added 17 lbs of Ryan Brothers Coffee and 4 lbs of TCHO Cacao Nibs were added to the coffee and cacao to steep before packaging.

(Bottle, thanks to Håkan) Black colour with no head. Malty, roasted, vinous nose with notes of espresso, dark chocolate, cacao, treacle and a touch of fresh asphalt. Malty, roasted taste with espresso, dark chocolate, cacao, oak wood, vanilla, liquorice, dried fruit, prunes, raisins, a touch of tamarind and a sweetish, vinous finish with a generous cacao bitterness. Full body, quite sweet. Really powerful and tasty, with lots of coffee, chocolate and oak. Still in good balance. Lovely beer!

Appearance is oily black, brown tinges, no head to speak of. Aroma is whisky, booze, brownie, fudge cake, coffee, treacle, tar, newly tarmaced road, oak barrel, vanilla, touch of smoke, port wine, rum-soaked dark fruit, leather. Taste- whisky, dark rum, smooth chocolate, treacle, dark malts, coffee, dark chocolate torte, oaky woody notes, bitter undertones, flat mouthfeel, oily coating in the mouth. Boozy but doesn’t taste like 13.5. Tasty stuff, let down a bit by the flatness.

This better be good after the mess I made taking the cork out... and it's fantastic! Was in the mood for something sweet tonight.

RB backlog. Super intense play of milk and dark chocolates, cocoa nibs, wheat, sourdough bread crust. Not too sweet in the start, but nutty sweetness builds up and gives way to mineralic and slightly tart notes.
