Bursting with Citra hop flavor and tropical, citrusy notes, this incredibly approachable pale ale packs the hop punch of an IPA twice its size.

No, we don’t know where the “e” went.

Can. Hazy golden body with a frothy white head. Aroma of toasted grain, grapefruit, resin. Lightly sweet throughout. Moderately to heavily bitter finish. Light to medium body, watery texture, fizzy carbonation. Flavors of grapefruit peel, resin. Drinkable but close to being mostly bitter water. Thin, over attenuated, off balance, little depth.

Big 3$ pounder can from chalet in n-lima. Citrus aroma fer sher, citra flowery hops that is. First taste is green grapefruit rind pith. As session develops, the bitterness really starts to set in toward the back of the throat. Certainly enters into the IPA territory, I've had many IPA less bitter than this. The eye is clear and pale with a big white head that gradually fades. Yes, that taste just keeps getting more and more bitter. Finally ends up with a long bitter finish. Not impressed but pretty cheap per ounce.

Surly XTRA 4.5% Citra Pale Ale Opaque gold with a thick white head. On cracking it open I was like “oh yeah, that’s the stuff”. The label says bright, citrusy, hoppy and it delivers on all counts. At first I felt the body was a bit light but as I continued drinking it, I couldn’t perceive that. At times you got notes of dank but this baby is pure Citra goodness. Great.

3 week old pint can A: Poured clear gold with a small but lasting head. S: Citrusy scent of lemon and grapefruit with pith and lemon cake. T: Pithy and very bitter with again, lemon and grapefruit dominant. Lemon zest joins light wood for the finish. M: Crisply carbonated, light and clean. Very refreshing. O: Very one dimensional with nothing happening but bitter citrus. Waited a long time to try this. Can't say I'm very impressed.

Surly can call it an extra pale ale, or try and sell it as an Americanized English-style Bitter, but what they've got is a Citra-bomb Session IPA through and through. Not a bad thing, mind you, but nothing that swerves greatly from the stylistic definition (and limitations) of a low-ABV IPA. Tons of grapefruit, lemon, and passionfruit, backed up by hits of pith and pine, with a crisp, clean finish accented by lingering citrus. I really dig the front half, wind up disappointed as the fade turns indistinct and dull. Summer-day hangin'-with-friends doin'-something-fun beer for sure, but not one I'd seek out otherwise.

16 oz. can, pours a hazy golden blonde with a medium white head. Aroma brings out citrus hops, biscuity malt and a little line. Flavour brings out a blast of piney and citrus hops, crisp biscuity malt, and biscuity malt. Juicy, sharp and dry. Very good.

Quite hazy copper and bronze coloured body with a very thin pure white head that fades quite quickly and does leave a pretty ugly lace on the sides. Aroma of bright citrus, honey and grassy herbal qualities with a little dose of tartness and a tiny bit of malt - but this all about the unencumbered hops - very nice and incredibly clean. Light-bodied; Strong citrusey and perfumey flavour at first with a nice mild bitterness from all the hops and a soft malt quality that shows up at the very end, along with a tiny bit of honey and fruit-based sweetness, but again, that is subdued. Aftertaste is crisp, grassy, herbal and very hop-centric in a good way - you have to go out of your way to find/taste malts. Overall, a very crisp and refreshing beer, packed with a lot of good grassy and herbal hop flavours that show the citrus elements and a faint bitterness at the very end. I sampled this sixteen ounce can, purchased from BeerTopia in Omaha, Nebraska on 13-February-2019 for US$9,99/six pack, sampled at home in Washington on 18-March-2019, just a month later.

Draft at Surly event at Craft Brewed. Pours a clear golden color with a finger of foam that lingers. Big pungent Citra nose, bright grapefruit and dank aromas. Clean and crisp, dry almost astringent finish. Palate is a little thin and watery, even for a session IPA. Would like a little more malt. --- Beer merged from original tick of Xtra-Citra Pale Ale on 30 Apr 2018 at 00:26 - Score: 7. Original review text: Big pungent Citra nose, bright grapefruit and dank Aromas. Clean and crisp, dry almost astringent finish. Hop watery.
