On a tiny tropical island near Africa, a dog named Casper runs a Belgian-type bar where you can feast on Belgian ice cream, waffles, cocktails, and, of course, the beer. If such a distant place can keep a Belgian spirit, then we here in Estonia, can brew a Belgian beer.

Casper is Belgian dark strong ale that gets its fruity aroma from the Belgian yeast and the sweet taste from the Abbey malt.

33cl bottle from Uba ja Humal, Tallinn. Pours chestnut coloured with a minimal head. Malty and caramelly aroma with lots of raisins, alcohol, hints of vanilla and something that reminds me of strong glue. Sweet and caramelly with raisins and some unpleasant notes. Doesn’t feel very balanced, not very pleasant either. Not sure if it’s as it should be, didn’t quite smell right at first, possible to drink, but some will hit the sink.

(Keg at Bryggeri Helsinki, 20160212) The beer poured clear and dark brown. Aroma had malts, molasses and wort. Palate was medium bodied with medium carbonation. Flavours were sweetness, molasses, grass, malts, wort and bitterness. Aftertaste was malty and bitter. A messy and unclean brew.

0,33L bottle, batch 1. Pours dark amber-copper with beige head. The head stays for some time. Aroma is sweet, burnt sugar, esters, dark fruits, malt. Flavor is sweet-sticky, malt, dark fruits, sour notes, and caramel. Finish is dry and burnt sugar. Alcohol is slightly noticeable. Overall: feels slightly messy (are the sour notes intentional?!), but as far as dark strong belgian type ales go, this is ok.
