Hops are the flowers or cones of the hop plant. They are the reason your beer is bitter, citrusy, piney or fruity. Hops are grown around the world & different strains of hops have vastly varying characteristics.

This series of single-hop beers aims to showcase the unique character of some of our favourite hop varieties. The second instalment of this series showcases Simcoe:

Simcoe hops are complex, best known for notes of passionfruit, pine resin, apricot, and fruity aroma and flavour.

440ml can: BB 12th March 2023. Drank at home on the afternoon of Saturday 13th August 2022. Rochdale v Grimsby Town. Opaque milky lemon body, huge foaming head. Yip, Simcoe hops in here, resinous, citrussy and fairly bitter, it's pretty dry as well.

440ml can from Asda. Hazy gold in colour, with a slight, bubbly, white head. Grassy hop, pine, pineapple and guava fruit aroma. Flavour had more tropical fruit, a touch of green herb, white pepper, light maltiness, giving way to a dryish finish. Enjoyable.

Can. Asda. 4 for 3 job. Hazed straw colour. Fluffy white head. Plenty of smelly Simcoe. Pissy and tart and a bit weedy. Oats in the background. Wheat. Taste is fairly sweet with a moderate green bitterness. Drinks light and airy. Foamy carbonation. Moderate bitterness to finish. Can’t really knock it at £2.25 a pop.

Can from ASDA Supermarket, Manchester. Hazy golden-yellow with a frothy-bubbly head. The Simcoe hop provides plenty of tropical fruitiness in both aroma and taste, whilst remaining quite a hoppy brew in design.
