In Dulce Jubilo - Nøgne Ø Julequad 2020 matured one year on Oloroso sherry barrels. The barrels offer an almost honey-sweet fruit compote where dried cherries are most prominent, followed by tobacco, leather and, of course, all the delicious toffee, raisin and prune flavor from the original brew.

The last bottle from a fair number of quads ordered from the responsive Smaakhuis quite some time back. Bottle 3771 of 4200 the label informs. I lift the top to the 33 cl bottle and pour inside of my favored Trappistes Rochefort glass. The view is a very dark, mahogany brown liquid with a practically non-existent head of very fine, khaki tan bubbles. I do notice a strong carbonation fortunately. The nose is delightful with ripe fruit, chocolate, a noticeable booziness, yeast and grain. I lift the glass and have a taste. Wow, is it fine or what. Unique tasting among the numerous quadrupels I have had previously. Chocolate again, prunes, berries, malt, syrup, a hint of wood, alcohol, cola and leather. This brew strikes me as being like a combination between a quad and an imperial stout. I’m glad I waited on this beer, one of the best quadrupels I’ve sampled in a really long time.

Honey-sweet fruit compote where dried cherries are most prominent, followed by tobacco, leather and, of course, all these delicious toffee, raisin and prune flavors from the original brew. De har glemt å nevne den supersaftige ettersmaken, og bortsett fra tobakk og lær som jeg ikke merker noe særlig til: tiltredes i all ærbødighet!

Bottle. An unclear dark brown beer topped by a small, creamy, dense dark beige head. Nice lacing. The aroma is super-delicious and complex. Cocoa, dark chocolate, dark berries, alcohol, prunes, cherry, wood hints, vinous notes, some honey and leather, notes of tobacco storage, caramel and some licorice. Layer upon layer. It's full-bodied, smooth and very lightly warming, sweet but not too sweet, with lots of flavors. Roasted malts, leather, cocoa, nuts, dark berries, alcohol, prunes and some raisin, tobacco and toffee in the flavor. Quite vinous, but not alcoholic. Quite long finish. Really pleasant this one, dangerously easy drinkable too. Pity the batch was so small. 220316

Really dark brown colour with thin head. Aroma and flavour are exceptionally intense with sweet dried fruits. Especially raisins, figs and dates. It's really rich and full. The slight booziness is welcome as it helps counterbalance the sweetness.

Bottle. Dark brown body under a fine, moderate sized beige head. Strong and complex aroma of dark, moderate roasted malt, caramel, dry fruit, wood, vinous alcohol. The alcoholic aroma is for me not to distinct Sherry but something in-between red wine, sherry and port, I also find notes of something in the direction of Aquavit actually. The alcohol is a bit sharp during the first sniff, but seems to settle straight after the first sip. Taste is bold and complex as well. Quite sweet, but less than expected, smooth malt, toffee, dry fruit, red berries, wood and the same vinous alcohol somewhere between port and sherry. There is also a hint of licorice to be found after a few more sips. Body in perfect balance and forever lasting aftertaste. All in all, a perfect balanced brew, dangerously easy drinkable considering the high ABV. Strong in taste but nothing is really dominating.
