Down in Kentucky and across the pond in Scotland, distillers who age their whiskeys for many years refer to the evaporation of the spirits from their barrels as “The Angel’s Share.” We couldn’t agree more. Our Angel’s Share is a barrel aged burgundy colored ale infused with copious amounts of dark caramel malt to emphasize the vanilla and oak flavors found in freshly emptied brandy barrels. Each batch spends no less than 6 months aging in the oak.

Bottle at Antwaerps Bierhuyske. Very thin, off-white head only retaining around the edges, deep reddish bronze colour, very dark but still transparent. Very complex, beguiling barley wine bouquet, of the kind I could sniff for hours; tawny port, banana liqueur, black olives, tons of vanilla tannins, milk chocolate, raisins soaked in brown rhum, coconut, marzipan, liquorice touch, candied orange, walnuts, cinnamon, mocha ice cream, red wine, candied dates. Intense candied sweetness in the onset but perfectly in place, bit syrupy, amaretto, sugary but in a refined, exotic kind of way, basic sourish accent, very soft, velvety, creamy mouthfeel, caramelly and lightly nutty undertone becoming deliciously chocolatey in the end, viscous and vinous as any big barley wine should be, peppery alcohol accent in the finish but only adding warmth and depth, orange liqueur, Pineau de Charentes, wonderfully bittersweet with oaky drought, long and very complex. Very expensive but fantastic, especially if you like deep barley wines the way I do. It doesn’t get a whole lot better than this... Epic!

Rating #950. On tap at Toronado. Dark brown color with small tan ring. Aroma is burnt sugar, a strong brandy barrel in there. Taste is sweet, lots of vanilla, more brandy booze, malts, quite intense. Is this the first half of Deliverance? Probably. Not bad, but just heavy and strong. The brandy barrel might be too strong in here.

Bottle split at the Cotteridge Convention, big thanks to Sarky for dropping this off even though he couldn’t stay, 24/01/15. Extremely dark mahogany brown with little in the way of a covering. Nose is rich caramel, toffee, dark fruits, spice, malts, raisens, sultanas. Taste comprises rum and raisen, toffee, spice, dark fruit rinds, dates. Full bodied, fine carbonation, lightly warming booze in the close. Solid BW.
