RAW was originally commissioned to be the house beers for Real Ale Weston and the Royal Artillery Arms, both now sadly closed. The landlord and drinkers were already huge fans of Merlin’s Magic, but wanted something a bit hoppier. They were also intrigued with our unfined natural approach to beer. So we trialled three different unfined, dry-hopped versions of Merlin’s Magic.

Layering the herbal dry-hopped characteristics over the rich malt base, and padding it out with body and flavour enhancing yeast really transformed the already sessionable Merlin’s Magic into something even more enjoyable. Everyone really loves the result. Consequently we make it available to select pubs whose customers appreciate its natural nature and enhanced flavours. If you are lucky enough to find some you will be rewarded with a truly remarkable best bitter, and perhaps begin to understand that beer is often the better for having some opacity.

330ml can. Look - murky amber-brown, small off white head, some bubbled retention. Nose - caramel and biscuit malts, slightly resinous, jammy fruits. Taste - sweet biscuit malts, some caramel, jammy, some citrus hops, moderate bitter finish with a touch of resin. Palate - quite light, semi-smooth on the palate, medium carbonation. Easy drinking best bitter with more going on than your average fare.

Canned. Goldeny orange colour with a small white head, which lasts for quite a while and leaves some lace. Aroma is biscuity, some crystal sweetness along with mild nuttiness, strawberries and some floral notes. Flavour is fruity, floral, some strawberries with mild wooden and some sweet malty notes.

# 1097; 6/2018. Tmavší pivo s nižší plností, výraznou bylinnou hořkostí, karamelové, lehce citrusové. Dobrý bitter, ale to není zrovna můj šálek kávy.

Pours a nice, almost perfectly transparent copper, with a big and quite dense white head that shows good enough retention and excellent lacing. Average intensity in the aroma: a slight biscuity malts base followed by jam-like citric (especially orange) notes and a grassy, slightly resinous presence. Taste notes follow the aroma, with excellent sweet/bitter balance (none standing out in either taste or aftertaste). Nice semi-dry finish. The beer has a modern kind of hoppiness for the style, but that hides a bit of the malt complexity. Light bodied with average per style carbonation, resulting in a classic smooth, easy mouthfeel. The beer was overall well made and did it's job at being a good quaffable bitter. Didn't find it very interesting though.
