Cherry Lambic Sour Ale

Winner of a gold medal at the 2018 Great American Beer Festival, Transatlantique Kriek begins its life in oaken vessels of Gert Christiaens’ Oud Beersel, a 130-year-old lambic brewery in the Zenne valley of Belgium – home of authentic Lambic beer. After time spent aging in wood, Oud Beersel’s lambic is blended with tart Polish cherries and shipped across the Atlantic to New Belgium. In concert with Oud Beersel’s cherry lambic, or Kriek, we blend an equal portion of golden sour ale matured for 1 – 3 years in our oak vessels called foeders. 50% Sour Golden Ale blended with 50% Traditional Cherry Lambic Ale leads to an intense cherry nose, a sour flash across the palate and a refreshing, mouthwatering finish.

Draught at St. Augustine’s, Vancouver
(listed as Lips of Faith - Transatlantique Kriek 2016)

Ruby color. Nice cherry aroma. Very tart, with a good body structure, but not much more than the cherries to talk about, and getting a bit drier in the final.
Nice, not complex at all though, just fermented cherry juice.

On tap at St. Augustine's, pours a hazy ruby red with a small off-white head. Aroma brings out lots of sour cherries, cough drops and medium acidity. Flavour is dominated by sour and sweet cherries upfront, followed by moderate acidity. Not overly complex but pretty thorough on the tart cherries. Decent.

Drucken på fat på Bishop, Gustav i Malmö. Smak och doft av körsbär, körsbärskärnor med toner av trä och jord. Lätt syrlig, god sötma, halvtorr, bra balans och fin beska. Gott!

22 ounce bottle into signature globe glass, bottled on 11/12/2015. Pours clear ruby red color with a 1 finger fairly dense light pink head with good retention, that reduces to a thin cap that lingers. Light spotty lacing clings around the glass, with a moderate amount of streaming carbonation retaining the cap. Aromas of big sweet/tart cherry, cranberry, raspberry, lemon, green apple, almond, cherry pit, red wine, pepper, oak, vanilla, hay, straw, light leather/funk, candi sugar, cracker, and yeast/oak earthiness. Damn nice aromas with great balance and complexity of fruity/funky/acidic yeast, cherries, oak barrel, and light-moderate malt notes; with great strength. Taste of big sweet/tart cherry, cranberry, raspberry, lemon, green apple, almond, cherry pit, red wine, pepper, oak, vanilla, hay, straw, light leather/funk, candi sugar, cracker, and yeast/oak earthiness. Fair amount of fruity/acidic tartness and light yeast/tannic oak spiciness on the finish; with lingering notes of sweet/tart cherry, cranberry, raspberry, lemon, green apple, almond, cherry pit, red wine, pepper, oak, vanilla, hay, straw, candi sugar, cracker, and yeast/oak earthiness. on the finish for a good bit. Damn nice complexity, robustness, and balance of fruity/funky/acidic yeast, cherries, oak barrel, and light-moderate malt flavors; with a great malt/tartness balance, and zero cloying flavors after the finish. Light-moderate dryness from acidity as well. Medium carbonation and body; with a very smooth, fairly creamy/acidic, and lightly tannic balanced mouthfeel that is great. Alcohol is very well hidden with minimal warming present after the finish. Overall this is an excellent blended fruit lambic. All around great complexity, robustness, and balance of fruity/funky/acidic yeast, cherries, oak barrel, and light-moderate malt flavors; very smooth and refreshing to drink with the modest acidity. A very enjoyable offering.

Trevlig smakbild. Gott.
