440 ml can, from Vinmonopolet Bryne. ABV is 10%. Pitch black colour, large to moderate tan head. Aroma of roast malts, chocolate, vanilla, cinnamon and chili. Smooth mouthfeel. The flavour is moderately sweet, with the same elements as the aroma, also hints of coffee, with a slight chili burn and quite moderate hops in the finish. Well balanced.

Moersleutel has been specializing in strong stouts and porters from the start so it comes as no surprise that every now and then, they tackle the old Central-American-themed ‘substyle’, basically kickstarted by Cigar City’s legendary Hunahpu’s back in 2010. This one fits neatly into that category. Pale yellowish beige, mousy, opening head on a black beer with thin, hazy mahogany edges. Aroma of beef stock cubes, dried chilies, old dusty ‘fondant’ chocolate bars, coffee cream, tea, roasted chicory, cinnamon, nutmeg. Sweetish onset but nowhere sticky, paired with quite strong, dry beef stock cube-like umami – too strong for this kind of stout, I think; medium carb, full and oily body. Hard-caramelly, toasted-walnutty, bitter-chocolatey maltiness, hints of cinnamon, almond and faded background vanilla but remaining very soft in chili heat. A warming, rum-like alcohol glow ensues. I guess I must have stumbled on an older can, this is much less vibrant and ‘piquant’ than it ought to be, with too much dry beef stock flavour to it. I never had this one fresh so I can only judge in the way it has reached me, and in that form, it was one of the less convincing Moersleutel stouts for me, I’m afraid.

44cl can from Etre Gourmet web shop. F: medium, tanned, good retention. C: black, opaque. A: chocolate, coffee, cocoa, dark fruits, caramel, bit toffee, spicy. T: full malty base, chocolate, cocoa, bit espresso, caramel, spicy, dark dried fruits, bit herbal, soft carbonation, good balanced yet no so complex, still fully enjoyed.
