American Beauty, an Imperial Pale Ale inspired by the Grateful Dead, captures the spirits of the band's 30 years of touring and recording. Dogfish Head and the Dead both built their followings by connecting directly with beer lovers and music lovers, so we asked those loyal fans to help drive the recipe. For more than 1,500 ingredient suggestions, organic granola was tops. It was the main course in millions of parking lot meals and is a sweet and toasty complement to the barley and all-American hops.

750 ml bottle. Aroma consists of dough, chalky candy, grain, floral. Pours clear copper with a medium beige head with good retention. Taste is lightly sweet, a bit tart; granola comes through, but if I didn’t see it mentioned on the label I wouldn’t have guessed it was in there. Tasty, but I’m not exactly blown away.

Location: 750 ml bottle from Oak Tree, 11/10/13

Aroma: The aroma is sweet fruit/melon, grass, resiny hops, cookie dough, honey, and spice
Appearance: Pours a bright, clear orange color with a lasting, frothy beige head and lots of lace
Flavor: The flavor is balanced, with some doughy malts, sweetness, and a cleanly bitter finish
Palate: The body is medium, it has a smooth, clean, fresh feel, and a soft carbonation
Overall Impression: There's certainly a lot going on here, but somehow the whole combination works. I didn't really get the expected granola flavor on my palate, but I liked what I did get. It has an overall freshness to it that is really enjoyable. Really stands out on the look and feel. Easily one of the best new DFH beers I have had in a while. Some of their recent one-offs have been a little disappointing, but not this one.

Barcade, Brooklyn tap ($6): Pours orange with a white head. Aroma is earthy hops, various grains (couldn’t put a finger on granola, even though I eat it fairly frequently), and some citrus. At the first few sips, this seemed to be substantially more citrus hop forward. As I kept drinking, it seemed to me to get to be more earthy and malty. Maybe it was because I ate a slice of pizza concurrently... Anyway, this is just added to the pantheon of Grateful Dead beers (Boulevard’s Long Strange Trip and Starr Hill’s Dark Star Stout and Grateful Pale Ale).

Pours deep, clear scarlet -> fire into a shaker. Off white head with medium retention recedes leaving gloppy sheets. Cracker and resin aromas. Slick with sweet caramel, oats and honey upfront turning to raisin before the lasting earthy resin finish.

Bomber from Nugget Market in Woodland, CA. Pours golden amber with a creamy yellow/white head. Aroma is greenly hoppy. Med body or better. Flavor is strangely grapey with a good dose of roasty malt and some veggy hop bitter. It is quite delicious.

750 mL bottle from Whole Foods Charlottesville. Pours a clear amber color with a large frothy tan head. Good head retention. Aroma of herbal, floral, spicy hops, honey and some graininess. The taste is honey, toasted malts, grains, spicy, citrus and herbal hops, mild grapes and sawdust. Medium bodied, complex, mild lingering bitterness, moderate carbonation. Nice beer.
