The Puffin, or 'tammie norrie' as it is affectionately known in Orkney, brings a smile to the face of anyone lucky enough to see it. Also known as the 'clown of the sea', the puffin is an unmistakable seabird due to its comical appearance - red and black eye markings and bright orange legs.

Puffin is a burnished bronze beer with aromas of spices, sweet nutty malt and dark fruits. An inviting rich malt palate is balanced with notes of herbs and spicy fruitiness.

Hops: Bramling Cross, Targert
Malts: Pale, Crystal, Malted Wheat

Bottle from Aldi I believe (or could have been Lidl). It clear rich mahogany brown with a small off - white head. The aroma is earthy, woody, spicy, leafy hop, old leather sofa, touch of bitter toffee, dried fruits and fruit cake. The taste is firmly dry, pleasing bitterness, bitter - sweet, spicy, sappy, woody vibes, leather, light tannin, chewy, hint of cacao toasted fruit cake, touch of toffee and caramel with a dry, toasty malt finish. Average body and moderate carbonation. Robust, flavourful and balanced. Deserves the high style score.

Bottle from The Orkney Brewery. Pours a clear copper colour with a thin off white head. Gentle carbonation. Aroma is malty, toffee, caramel, hints of lemon and nutmeg. Taste has the same notes again but with some added spice and a subtle hoppy bitterness. Light hints of blackcurrants. Lovely balance between the malts and the hops. Medium bodied with a very smooth slick mouthfeel. Nice long citrusy mildly bitter aftertaste. Really nice beer.

Bottle from Cork & Cask. Clear amber body with a thin beige head. Low carbonation. Faint lacing. Aroma of nuts, wood and caramel. Flavour of stewed pear, lemon and earthy hops. Thin to medium body with a light mouthfeel. Soft fizz. This reminded me of Uerige Alt.

20th Nov 2017. Shrewsbury Beer Share Group Meeting in Chez Sophie. 500ml bottle: BBE Jun 2018. This was one of my offerings. The body was clean and clear, amber/tawny in colour, the head an off-white affair. Malty, woody, nutty and semi-sweet in nature. My sweet tooth really liked it, even the growing bitterness in the finish.
