A new Gordon Xplosion – always a delight… Can (50 cl) from a night shop in Ghent. Initially thick, off-white head but fizzing away like the head on a glass of coke and quickly gone, over a clear amberish-tinged orange blonde beer with vivid sparkling throughout. Aroma of industrial caramel, moonshine or cheap bourbon, glue, gasoline even, burnt sugar, industrial honey, breakfast cereals, rubber. Sweet onset, lots of industrial honey and additive caramel but no fruitiness (and none expected), sugary and a bit cloying, fizzy carb, unpleasantly glueish mouthfeel – and at the same time feeling thinner than expected for a beer of this ABV. Superficial cereally graininess supports a lingering honey sweetness and eventually a cheap bourbon-like aspect shows up, reinforced by a physically challenging booziness – the burn of which was already palpable in the onset. Methylated spirits and nail polish spring to mind, very harsh and raw, with that honey sweetness lingering beneath. Granted, that simple and artificial honey sweetness does have a somewhat softening effect here, making this version less horrible than the other Xplosions – but apart from that, this remains a very harshly boozy, cheap strong Euro lager (or indeed malt liquor) aimed at alcoholics, the rough underworld of beer culture so to speak. Could not finish this – most of it went down the drain.
