Our piney, dank, and mind-bending East Coast IPA is a huge part of Blue Point's history. As Long Island's original IPA, it is often the first IPA of many local drinkers who pass the love for this crushable IPA from generation to generation.
Hoptical Illusion's malt-forward body and piney hop kick have landed it 4 notable awards, including a GABF medal.

Draught. Pours light gold with a small, white head. Biting hop aroma, standard notes of pine and citrus, as well as a bit of caramel malt. Fairly rich flavor, plenty of fruity hops and mild earthiness. A nice, sweet malt presence provides some balance. Medium bodied and well carbonated, finishing with a mild stickiness. Not too bitter, this is a very accessible - and good - IPA.

Bottle. Cloudy amber body. Off-white, frothy head, slowly diminishing. Aroma of sweet pineapple, orange, citrus, grapefruit and flowers with hints of caramel, The flavor is moderately sweet and lightly bitter. It finishes lightly to moderately sweet and moderately. bitter. Medium body, watery/velvet texture and lively carbonation. Sweeter than many American IPAs, but quite good. Hops are bright enough to stand up to the sweet, malty backbone, but not bold enough to scrape your tongue. Very enjoyable.

Bottle: Poured a clear medium amber color ale with a rather large foamy head with OK retention and no lacing. Aroma of medium bitter hops with some floral notes. Taste is a nice enough mix between some bitter hops with a stronger then expected caramel malt backbone. Body is a bit thin for style with good carbonation. Not bad though a bit shy on the hops for the style.

Draught at the New York Wine and Culinary Center. Medium copper color. Big grapefruit nose; frgrant hops. Lots of fruit with enough nice malt in the background. Very fruity flavor--mostly tropical, sweet and cloying with a bitter finish. Too sweet and fruity for me, and not very well integrated, though the hop character is original.

Draught, Rattle & Hum, 28 July 2009 Clear gold with thick foamy head. Burst of grapefruit aroma then rich grapefruit and grassy hoppiness with slight tangerine notes. Dry finish with bitterness on the tongue as the astringency dissipates. A good quenching Ipa, even at 6.3% ABV

I rated this beer just to move up the Blue Point top raters list, I actually haven’t rated the 2 most common brews. Fortunately, this is a beer I actually like and have had numerous samples over numerous years. This particular rate was on tap at Rattle’n’Hum, imperial pint to boot as well. Aroma is all hoppy (fruit punch and sweet bubblegum) and fresh. Flavor is similar with no malt getting in the way at all. Easy drinking stuff, good hop character with no flaws. I can see myself keep drinking this for years to come.

Bottle. Light amber with a nice, fluffy head. Light citrus, mainly grapefruit in the nose. Light flavor (at first). Gets a bit heavier with nice, not strong hops. Not great, but worth drinking.
