This brawny, tawny ale is a savory celebration of spicy rye malt and rye whiskey, compliments of extended aging in freshly-emptied rye barrels. Rye on Rye pours a deep amber and evokes notes of charred oak and vanilla, with a finish this delightfully boozy and sweet!

12 oz bottle. Visually a somewhat dirty brown color with a small beige head that dissipates to a fine ring around the glass. The aroma is distinct with caramel, toffee and perhaps some prunes. The taste is toffee, raisins and dates. Also, in the taste, a bit of subtle cinnamon and some light allspice. A bit of underlying sweetness too, probably from the caramel. The palate is light-medium but seems appropriate to the style. Carbonation is soft and understated. Finishes long and a bit cloying. Paired well with some Ritz crackers. I'm a bit surprised to see it was aged in Templeton Rye barrels, my favorite rye whiskey, as I did not get much of the Templeton flavor. Overall: a joy to drink.

On tap at Hogshead Tavern. Pours rubescent brown. Caramel, vanilla, pepper, sweet syrup, biscuit. Good body. Tasty.

Draft at Barrelman's Room. Cloudy reddish brown color. Thin ring of foam in my 5 oz. glass. Smell has alcohol and a bit of rye spice, but is hard to pick out. Taste is pretty smooth and thick. I get an initial note of cinnamon, then a slight rye whiskey sensation. It is kind of like a less strong Templeton Rye, same viscosity, but not as alcoholic or “>Choke!< >Gasp!< SMO-O-OTH!”. Nice, but I’ve gotta say, not an OhmyGod beer. Meaning the alcohol will likely catch up to me if I have more than this 5 oz. taster. Some vanilla after a few sips, and an oaky sensation.

Draft sample. 12.0 ABV and 47 IBU. Clear amber color with a small off-white head. Nose of heavy whiskey. Taste follows the nose. Way too strong alcohol and whiskey flavors. No beer flavor here. At least it's smooth. Tick.

On tap at HomebrewStuff. Cloudy medium brown with a slight reddish hue. Thin but dense and lasting beige head and even sheets of lacing. Toasted malt dark caramel flavors. Some of the sharp rye bite. Some mellow brown sugar sweetness as well. Tastes like it’s been sitting in a cool basement for a long time.

Great rye flavor for an American strong ale. Also good rye Aroma with a little bit of booze and malt. Flavor is like nose although the sweetness is overpowering. Thankfully there is enough carbonation to help balance. Body is decent but the finish is hampered a touch by the sweetness. The booziness is present throughout.
