n the 80’s the interest for traditional regional beers increased. Véronique, daughter of Henri IV, launched a new special beer in 1981. It was a blond beer of high fermentation. The first time it was brewed it was for the inauguration of the Saint-Arnold statue in Bruges. Saint-Arnold is the patron of the brewers … However, the beer was a success and the Mayor asked for it to be served at receptions in the townhall. The beer was a bit stronger than other beers and that is why it got the appropriated name of ‘Straffe Hendrik’ (Strong Henri). In 1988 Riva NV took over the beer brand. Straffe Hendrik have been brewed by Riva in Bruges until 2002.

Draft at Brouwerij De Halve Maan in Bruges, Belgium. The pour is a hazed brown golden with a small light tan head. The aroma is spice aromatic, caramel malt and light earth. The taste is the blend of the caramel malt, yeast and earthiness of the nose, a bit of a lighter bodied version of a Brune but well integrated and executed. The palate is medium to light bodied with soft natural carbonation and the clean finish.

Bottle bought a while ago in the Bierloods, Adegem. Best before 2009. Dark brown colour, beige foam, doesn’t last a long time. Aroma of caramel, plums, raisins and brown sugar. Light notes of port. Not bad.

The dark version of the original Brugse Straffe Hendrik, discontinued when Riva went bankrupt. Deep caramel brown colour, yellowish white, medium thick foam and malty profile with dried fruits, candi syrupy sweetishness without being cloying, caramelly malts and mild grassy hop bitterness in the finish. Was a decent but not very distinctive Belgian ale.

Bottle. A clear, copper beer with a small beige head. Dried fruits, some alcohol, caramel, hints of spices and celler in the aroma. The flavor is sweet, with dried fruts, caramel and cellar. Some spiced notes too. Full-bodied and sweetish in the mouth. The finish has a nice blend of caramel and bitterness, as well as some metal. A quite pleasant one. 090619
