Horndean Special Bitter (HSB) was first brewed in 1959 to meet a growing demand for a higher strength bitter. Sales growth was slow throughout the sixties when BBB and the cask milds were the predominant Gales beers. However, following the creation of CAMRA and the greater public interest in cask conditioned beer, HSB sales grew throughout the seventies and eighties and became Gales major brand. Production moved to Fullers in early 2006.

Copper color, good yellow foam. Aroma and taste: reach malts and pleasant hop bitterness, a bit fruity and floral. Nice beer.

On cask at the Haymarket. Appearance - deep amber to dark honey in colour. Nice proportionate head. Nose - honeycomb and biscuit. Taste - more honeycomb, spiced biscuit this time. Palate - crunchy and creamy in texture. Light to medium bodied. Fairly balanced and quite drinkable. Overall - decent traditional style ale.

Cask at the Prince Harry. Unfortunately, this is a victim of some ill-,maintained lines, and it presented itself with slight vinegar notes. Sensed a standard bitter under it all, malty, bready and mildly sweet. Would like to sample again.
