The St. Paul Speciale is an amber coloured, high-fermented abbey beer of Brouwerij Sterkens. This beer was brewed according to the so-called purity law of 1516. Thanks to the dryhopping technique, which adds hops after the fermentation, it has a sweet, fruity aroma with notes of caramel and malt. The Speciale has a rich, sweet and slightly bitter taste.

Bottle from Drinks Vanuxeem, Ploegsteert, Belgium. Pours a slightly hazy copper colour with a thin soapy looking off white head. Aromas of caramel, citrusy orange, with hints of spices and tobacco. Taste has more of the caramel and citrus notes and a touch more spice. Sweet tang on the finish. Thin to medium body with a slightly fizzy mouthfeel.Nothing special but not bad considering the low abv for a Belgian brew.

33cl bottle from De Achelse Kluis bottle shop. F: huge, creamy, bit tan, good retention. C: amber, hazy with yeasty debris. A: malty, vaguely fruity, bit orange, mineral, caramel. T: medium malty base, orange, bit peach, floral, yeasty, caramel, coriander, soft carbonation, beside the name there is nothing “special” for me about it, ok for the style, partially enjoyed.

Malt and prunes in the aroma. Sweetish, malty taste with metal and licorice. Thinnish. Herbal, bitter finish. Unmemorable, but nice aroma.

Flesje thuis gedronken.
