The St. Paul Speciale is an amber coloured, high-fermented abbey beer of Brouwerij Sterkens. This beer was brewed according to the so-called purity law of 1516. Thanks to the dryhopping technique, which adds hops after the fermentation, it has a sweet, fruity aroma with notes of caramel and malt. The Speciale has a rich, sweet and slightly bitter taste.

Slightly aged sample Small tan head over fully opaque amber-brown beer, UFO-ridden. Oxydized, diluted portwine; watery, with a dash of walnutoil. Oxydized flavours, slightly nutty, Madeira-vinous. Finish has some fade hops, roasted & caramel. Spritzy carbonation, but empty feel, slightly slick. Seriously oxydized for relatively short overaging. In Webbianese, St. Paul Not-so-Special.

A dark brown ale with a thick frothy lacing mocha head. In aroma, sweet caramel malt with candy sugar, light curacao, ok. In mouth, sweet fruity malt with loads of dark fruits, oxidation, treacle, tired. Bottle is bb Dec 2010.

Very little clouded copper red to red brown beer, light beige head, aery and unstable, non adhesive. Aroma: citrus notes, bit metallic, hint of bread yeast. MF: good carbon, medium body. Taste: citrus and slightly bitter hops, bit of malts, toast. Aftertaste: mocha and caramel being overpowered by the citric but not bitter hops. It is worth checking this one out. Not the best beer I ever had, but definitely one of the more special ones. Ha! Special.

330ml green bottle with a long, thin neck. Bought at Vinmonopolet a long time ago (bb.29.09.09). Medium, off-white head. Deep amber-brown body. Mild malty aroma with a discreet touch of yeast. Flavour of fruit-filled, sweet malts, slightly roasted. Not enough bitterness in the finish to counter all the sweetness. Foamy in the mouth (TromsΓΈ, 21.02.2009).

33 cL bottle, thanks to BelJohansen. Pours hazy orange with a lacing white head. Ligth fruity and caramel malt aroma. Flavour is slight herbal to spice with a dominant yet smooth caramel malt base and a light yeast note. Nice sweet finish, light yeast note.
