Bottle from LDW. Dark brown, creamy beige foam. Sweet malty nose with notes of dried fruit, caramel and brown sugar. Sweet with notes of ’special belge’. Not very good.

Bottle thnx to Beerlover_ben . Label is obviously made to look as much as possible as Cara-pils ( a very cheap lager beer in Belgium that has the name to be THE drink for hobo’s ) Pours clear copper , small white head . Smell is malty , thick , sweet, sugar . Taste is sweet , very sticky . Ambermalts and sugar . Coca-cola like spices ( hints of herbs ) . Bit too much carbo . I think I might prefer the actual cara pils lol

Bottle split with Bruce and Colin at De Heeren van Liedekercke - Denderleeuw, Belgium. Vintage 1997 (consumed in March 2013). Pours perfectly clear, rich honey-gold with a fine, white cream head. Aged caramel on the nose with a bit of toasted cardboard, honey and bread. Medium sweet flavor, quite oxidised, with dry bread, light metal, ripe and leathery dark fruits. Medium bodied with fine carbonation. Warming finish with more bread, subtle metal, obvious notes smacking of oxidation, some toffee. Definitely an aged beer but there’s still something to love here.

Commissioned by Pelgrims N.V. from Aarschot, a dubbel with thick, yellowish white, dense, moussy head, pure copper colour, transparent with ruby hue and medium fizz. Strong aroma of candi syrup, banana, coffee liqueur, dates, almond, liquorice, floral hops, pine resin and apple peel. Fresh fruity taste with relatively strong carbo, smooth and rounded palate, caramelly and somewhat nutty malts, bit resinous mouthfeel, vague sweetness, coffee-like roasted bitterness in the finish with a bit of warming alcohol. Though almost nobody seems to use the term anymore in Belgium, I’d classify this as a Scotch style ale - the Belgian way, of course.

Bottle split with Leighton and Bruce at DHVL, 22/03/13 - 1997 Vintage. Hazed dark amber with a thin white head that clears to a pond. Nose carries quite an oxidised presence, treacle toffee, dark malt notes, light smoke, hint of fruits. Taste comprises dark toffee, musty notes, oxidisation present, earthy, dirt, burnt sugars, dark toffee ring. Fuller end of medium bodied, fine carbonation, drying finale. Drinkable but ageing has done this one no favours, quite the oxidised cloak it wears!

Bottle @ home. Hazy orange to red color, full sized beige head. Smell malts, caramel, dried fruits, raisin. Taste malts, caramel, overripe and dried fruits, raisin, a nice smooth bitterness and a hint of fruitpeel-bitterness in the finish. Medium body, low to medium carbonation. Quite decent.

Bottle from De Heeren Van Liedekercke, vintage 1997, 12 years old
Pours a hazy amber color, initially with some head and bubbles on the glass sides, but all disappearing quickly. The aroma is mild, sweet and fruity, perfumy; only partially oxidized. It has a delicate, fruity malt flavor, the oxidation is minimal, with liquor-like tones and very light sweet liquorice, but the bitterness is almost gone. Interesting experience, and barely showing its age.
