6/III/15 - on tap @ Den Hert (Vichte) - BB: n/a (2015-310)
Clear orange to blond beer, creamy white head, unstable, dissipates quickly, adhesive, leaving a nice lacing in the glass. Aroma: very malty, hay, grains, well at least it's not sugar or corn. MF: ok carbon, medium to light body. Taste: very metallic, hay, grains, cow fodder, little bitter. Aftertaste: malty, metallic, pretty bitter. Not the worst lager I've had!

One of those remnants of a bygone era of local, unpasteurized ’pils’ in Belgium, a whole string of which developed when pale lager conquered this country in the middle of the previous century. This one yielded a creamy, yellowish white, irregular, sticky head and a deep ’old gold’ colour, clear with quiet sparkling. Weakish aroma, primarily consisting of an honest and genuine pale malt sweetness, floral hops, some pear and iron; neutral onset, light but genuine malt sweetness, crisp, medium carbo, weak metallic echo, grainy and light grassy hoppy finish. Low profile, but as said, an honest ’pilsje’ I’d prefer over the larger brands any time, in the absence of anything else. But be sure to drink it as fresh as possible: being unpasteurized, it begins to reek of sewer and wet cardboard when it passes its date and then becomes thinner and less refreshing.
