Black Xantus is a rare bird and the first new release from Nectar Ales in Years. It is the First ever “big-beer” to be released under the Nectar Ales line. Barrel aged for 6 months in combination of Bourbon, retired Firestone Union and
wine barrels and Infused with fair-trade, organic coffee from local roaster Jobella. Rich bourbon and coffee aromas greet the senses. Complex chocolate and tobacco flavors fill the palate. This beer displays a full-bodied mouth-feel
and an overall balanced presentation. It would be a perfect pairing to rich chocolate desserts.

Bottled. A deep red beer with a thin orangey head. The aroma has notes of roasted malt, caramel, soy sauce, and wood. The flavor is sweet with strong notes of roasted malt as well as medium notes of hops, soy sauce, and wood, leading to a dry roasted finish. Thanks yespr for sharing.

Wood and toffee aroma, with soy sauce accents. Black pour, thin tan head. Full bodied, alcohol noticeable. Date flavor, somewhat bourbony. Charred oak and bark finish. Not very dynamic. Good beer, but overshadowed by the wealth of better imperial stouts that are available. The elevated bottle price makes it doubly disappointing.

Bottles. Pours pitch black. Big, thick beige head. Pungent aroma of dark chocolate, roasted coffee, and some bourbon. Flavor is deep: Rich, burnt malt gives strong coffee and chocolate notes. Also some vanilla and overripe dark fruits. Roasty, tobacco finish. Huge body, oily, thick, smooth. Really great beer.

Sampled from the bottle at the 2010 February Circle City Tasting. Poured near black, but definitely a dark brown with a dark grayish brown head. Aroma had notes of coffee, tobacco and a bit of whiskey. Flavor was full of coffee and sweet dark grains with a bit of underlying alcohol.

Bottle @ J.C.G US Tasting Pt.2. Pours pitch black with a small creamy lasting head and lacings. Nose is roast, vanilla and coconut. Flavor is pretty dominated by the barrel aging. Some coffee, vanilla and coconut going on. Sticky and oily. Warmth. One dimensional.

Black with a small tan head. Big chocolate aroma with coconuts from the bourbon oak, and a fruity hint of apples. Rich chocolate flavour with oak and bourbon. The alcohol feels a little raw and aggressive

Bottle. Blackish beer with a tan head. Bourbon and rich malt aroma with light roast. Malt and vanilla flavor with bourbon, light roast, and caramel. Fuller bodied. Vanilla lingers with light roast, malt, and caramel. A bit strong on the vanilla.

Courtesy of kiefdog. Pours very dark with thin tan head. The aroma is modest with notes of roasted malts, caramel malts and sweet malts. The taste begins roasty and sweet with tasty rich dark chocolate. It gets somewhat burnt too by midway with the addition of a thin layer of caramel malts hanging on into the after taste. Nice brew.
