Bottle from Drinks Vanuxeem, Ploegsteert, Belgium. Pours a deep amber with a reddish hue and a medium sized soapy looking off white head. Aromas of red fruits, berries, toffee, caramel and brown bread. Taste has dry dark fruits, more red berries, caramel and toasty brown bread with added notes of citrus orange, some ginger and a touch of brown sugar on a slightly sweetish finish. Thin to medium body with fairly low carbonation. Nice drink which seems to fit in nicely with this festive Christmas time of year.

Wallonian 'ambrée' with spices and honey, apparently made for an Italian commissioner. Old school religious themed and in that sense very classically 'Belgian' label, trying to convey the solidity of a Belgian abbey beer I guess. Medium thick, regular, pale greyish off-white head, creamy ring around the glass but dissipating in the middle, on a lightly hazy, deep coppery amber beer with bronze-ish hue; strings of vivid sparkling here and there; turns into a deeper, more brownish-hued, completely clouded bronze with sediment. Aroma is spicy Millevertus to the extreme: peppermints, eucalyptol (cough syrup), cloves, coriander seed, nutmeg, star anise, cinnamon - not sure which of these spices are actually used, but they are awfully dominant, almost entirely covering up underlying impressions of freshly cut red apple, peanuts, honey indeed, dried apricots, some vague wet dog, straw, dry cookies, nectarine, chewing gum. Sweet, fruity onset with mild sourish edge, ripe red apple, some banana, fresh fig, cranberry - all almost immediately drenched in a resinous, sweet, ethereal spiciness that extends deep into the finish and fiercely dominates retronasally, with again peppermint and eucalyptus, as well as cloves (possibly phenolic in nature), nutmeg and soapy coriander. Carbonation is medium, mouthfeel is slick and resinous, with the resinous effect reinforced by the spicing; supple, caramelly, cookie sweetish malt base, made sweeter by the honey and balancing on the edge of cloyingness; a 'speculoos'-like effect results from the combination of 'cookie' malt sweetness with the strong spiciness. Herbally, almost tea-ish hop bitter tail with some toasty malt bitterishness, but the sweetness remains; something vaguely metallic in the aftertaste too, as well as a glow of gin-like alcohol which should not be this obvious in a 7% ale. Caramelly and toasty malt bittersweetness lingers, with the sweetness accentuated by both the honey and the spices, the latter lingering as an ethereal 'cloud' in the nose after swallowing... I am not the greatest fan of spiced ales - I think I had way too many of them, having grown up in Belgium where spicing is still overly common - and Millevertus excels at this practice, so this truckload of 'pharmaceutical' spicing shouldn't have come as a surprise. Sometimes it works out fine, like in their Amaranthe with exotic peppers, but in this case they went way over the top and created something so strong in minty and eucalyptus-like aromas that it invades the nose both straight and retronasally. This could work as a medicine against nasal congestion, but drinking a whole bottle of it is asking a bit much from your consumer. Technically not badly executed per se, though, so have a point for that, but you will really, really need to like strong ethereal spicing in order to appreciate this. Not my cup of tea - or should I say cough syrup...

330ml bottle provided by djoeye. Lasting off-white head to a hazy apricot coloured body, spotty lacing. Modest smell of ginger and dried fruits. Mixed taste profile of toffee, apricot and restrained ginger. Dry and sweet ending. Quite well bodied, rather too sweet in the long run though (Tromsø 25.08.2016).
