Created in 1968 to commemorate the renowned English writer, Thomas Hardy’s Ale is a limited edition barley wine. Numbered and vintage-dated to be stored for years (even over 25 years, according to those who have made it in the past); this legendary beer is finally back in production. A piece of English history we would like to share with you.

Bottled (Alko Web, drank with Mats). Deep amber colour, minor head. Aroma is sugary sweet, mild glue and some spiciness along with some kettukarkki. Flavour is sugary, plummy, some spices and creamy tones with some fudge and toffee too. Very sweet, but actually alcohol can be felt, but is very well hidden into everything in this one. Nice one!

(Bottle, #15886), Hazy reddish amber colour with brief, foamy head. Malty, vinous nose with treacle-toffee, oak wood, dried apricots, brown sugar, orange, chocolate, hazelnuts, dried fruit and herbs. Malty, vinous, sweet taste with notes of dried apricots, oak wood, brown sugar, chocolate, cinnamon, hazelnuts, orange peel, dried fruit, herbs and a generous spicy/resiny bitterness in the finish. Full body, sweet. Warming and vinous. Solid and well made barley wine.Very nice.

Bottle. Clear, dep golden to amber body under a small, fast disappearing beige head. Moderate carbonation. Rich aroma of malt, dry fruit, caramel, candy sugar and warming vinous alcohol. Taste in the same direction, sweet and malty with caramel, dry fruit, candy sugar, vinous alcohol and some bitterness. Full bodied with long lasting, sweet malty aftertaste. A very nice, slow sipper, not sure if it’s just the memories from a lost time or the previous versions from Eldridge Pope actually was a tad better. Still nice anyway.

330ml bottle no. 04435, vintage 2022, bought at Vinmonopolet Langnes. The noisy pour reveals a clear dark reddish body, a fast dissipating white head and a few dotted spots on the glassware. Promising smell of dark fruit, grain, and mid-sweet caramel malts. Rich taste of candied sweet, stewed fruit, bread, and wood. Lingering drying close, warming down the swallow. Full bodied. Lazy Sunday afternoon enjoyment. (Tromsø 29.01.2023).

Bottle #41675 imported from the continent. The aroma is rich and unctuous, oily, sticky, fudgey, dried fruits, raisin, sultana, candied peel, marzipan, panettone, fruit cake, oak, spice and leather. The taste is slick, oily, unctuous, sticky, bitter - sweet, pleasing alcohol warmth, raisin, sultana, candied peel, toffee, fudge, nutty, panettone, fruit cake, oak, leather, toothy, spice, earth and light tannin with a drying, warming finish. Fulsome body, fine carbonation and thick, oily mouth - feel. Coats the mouth. A really nice traditional style barley wine. Drinks very well.
