Created in 1968 to commemorate the renowned English writer, Thomas Hardy’s Ale is a limited edition barley wine. Numbered and vintage-dated to be stored for years (even over 25 years, according to those who have made it in the past); this legendary beer is finally back in production. A piece of English history we would like to share with you.

330 ml bottle, as Thomas Hardy's Ale Golden Edition 50th Anniversary, Vintage 2018, bottle No. 01037, from Bestofbeers, Denmark. ABV is 13%. Hazy reddish brown colour, minimal and shortlived of-white to beige head. Low carbonation. Aroma of malts, molasses, tobacco, oak and caramel, hints of dark dried fruits. Moderately sweet flavour with the same elements, distinct oak and tobacco, moderate hops. Warming mouthfeel.

Bottled. Deep burgundy colour, small head, low carbonation. Caramelly nose with prunes and pine needles. Sweet with full body and dense, rounded mouthfeel. Caramel and madeira, pine needles and dates. Warming finish with resinous bitterness. Still young and somewhat raw.

Flaska från SB. Allt känns igen men kanske lite större och ner harmonisk redan vid relativt ung ålder. Fruktkaka, knäck, söta äpplen, honung och en lite kryddig beska. Mycket gott och perfekt till julkakorna och knäcken.

330ml bottle @Birrifugio Trastevere (Rome). Ambrata viva, leggermente torbida, schiuma leggera a bolle grossolane. Al naso note di marzapane, pian di spagna imbevuto, caramello, marmellata d'arancia, frutta sotto spirito. In bocca è dolce all'attacco, con chiusura amarognola, etilica, frutta matura. Corpo pieno, carbonazione medio-leggera. Discreta.

Pours clear dark copper color with almost no head. Aromas of dark fruits, molasses, and some booze. Sweet molasses flavors with raisins and plums. A little more boozy than the 2017 version. Medium to full body with no carbonation.

Flaska från SB. Något mörkare rostbrun, liten smutsvit krona. Som en lite tyngre variant av den vanliga. Mer av allt. Bränt socker, lite likör/efterrättsvin, nötiga inslag, torkad frukt, övermoget äpple. Stor, tjock kropp.

Wonderful bottle. Great design, cool how they list some special TH releases. But with all that info, nothing to detail how this version is different. Pours a murky reddish hue with a small dissipating head. A clear TH nose, fresh berries and big malts. Sweet, big malts, more berries, some toffee. The palate is thin. Sort of boozy, I'd expect a barrel or multiple barrels to be involved. Not sure.

Bottle from Julio's Deep amber in color bordering on copper with a decent sized long lasting off white head. Rich bready toasty toffee and caramel maltiness with bits of dark dried fruits and a fair amount of warming alcohol. Doesn't seem as harsh as the older Hardy's did when they were fresh and I quite enjoyed sipping on this beer. Might need a little bit of age to come into its brilliance.
