An exceptional beer, in collaboration with Le Motel. We dug into his musical inspiration of the indigenous people of South American and the Caribbean. Guava derives from the Arawak word "Guayabo" and balances out this sour beer together with the hops for tropical and citrusy notes on a base of refreshing acidity. Low in alcohol, very drinkable and with a nice body, the guava matches really well with sourness, giving an extra sour layer of from the fruit itself, also giving it some sweet notes and tropicality.

New 'official' BBP beer in collaboration with Le Motel (I have no idea what this is), a sour ale flavoured with guava, bottle from De Hopduvel in Ghent. Initially thick and very frothy, egg-white, tightly cobweb-lacing, large-bubbled yet mousy, audibly crackling head, opening and eventually significantly thinning to even dissolving into nothing, on a hazy, straw blonde beer with apricot hue and fountains of fierce sparkling rushing up from the bottom. Aroma of strong fresh guava, ripe pineapple including its sourness, ripe starfruit, yoghurt, granadilla, red bell peppers, fresh sourdough, bread crumbs, sugared lime juice, chalk, tropical orchids, cheese spread, sour cream, freshly cut cucumber, green hogweed juice, stewed purple tomatoes, fermenting apples, pear juice, lemon candy. Brisk, 'sunny' onset, sour grapes and green gooseberry acidity mixed with softening sweet guava and mango notes, the guava in its pure and fresh form very much present indeed, fiercely carbonated and even a bit stinging, 'cristalline' in effect and in that sense enhancing crispness and 'fraîcheur', sour apple and lime aspects, lean mouthfeel based on a white-bready and sweetish-cereally maltiness, feeling fuller than its 5.4% ABV, dried by ongoing fruity sourness; the guava never leaves, on the contrary, it returns in full force in the finish, adding lots of lively, colourful fruit acidity as well as a sultry exotic effect with an impression of sweetness and an ever so light green tomato-like umami presence; some light soapiness accompanies the bready qualities of the malt and yeast, but this guava freshness pierces through it all, dominating the finish in a complex setting of lingering maltiness, breadiness and fruitiness, while hops appropriately remain of a soft, distantly grassy nature, adding only minor structural bitterishness. The guava rules here, in its pure, sour form with a 'heavy' tropical sweet aroma to it; I had a couple of guava-fruited beers before, but all of them were fruit IPAs so it is literally and metaphorically refreshing to encounter it in a (clearly kettle) sour context. The beautiful head formation is clearly impaired by this fruit, but otherwise this is a very refreshing sour ale with a distinct character. BBP is getting better and better at this whole sour ale theme.

27 April 2019. At Zythos Bierfestival. Deputy Taster: Anke. Cheers to Ama Deke, Erwin, John & Meeki! Clear yellow, unstable, thin, foamy, white head. Aroma of ripe mandarin, mango, lemon zest, peach, passionfruit, yoghurt. Taste is light to medium fruity sweet, hints of mandarin & pineapple, sourish lime, passionfruit & lemon, a bit yoghurty, slightly hoppy bitter with yellow grapefruit & mango, leading to a dryish, floral hoppy finish, not too bitter, lingering sweetish & sourish yellow fruit. Medium body, slick texture, fizzy carbonation. Smooth little brew.

Draft @ BBP Taproom.
