440ml can - Pours a dark brown colour with a small frothy beige head. Aroma is roasted malts and caramel with some woody notes. A light sweet roasted taste, sweet roasted malts, popcorn, caramel, chocolate and dark fruit flavours with hint of smoke in a lightly drying roasted finish.

Tap at Koht. Thin body, med-high carbonation. Very dry, high bitterness, low sweetness. Lots of deep roasted, coffeeish, slightly acrid and woody tanninish flavour. Overall pretty interesting, tasty, good.

Porter by this Dublin-based craft brewery, brewed using the old decoction method; from tap at Dok’s taproom in Hal 16, Ghent. Pale greyish white, open, thin but well-retaining ring of mousse on a dark chestnut brown beer with wine red glow. Aroma of hard caramel, strong espresso and coffee grounds, toasted pecan nuts, dried fig, black tea, toast, smoked apple peel note. Sweetish, clean onset, dried fig and dried apple peel but low in esters, rounded with softish carb; smooth oily mouthfeel, caramelly-malty and a bit walnutty, sweetish but quickly shifting to roasted, coffee-like, mouth-filling bitterness. Some leafy, bit herbal hop bitterness joins in to support the caramelly and roasted-nutty effects as well as that coffee-like roastiness. Retronasal coffee comes up after swallowing. Clean, sleek brown porter, with enough roasted bitterness to pass for a dry stout as well (but this is a useless discussion). Highly drinkable – perhaps just a tad too clean for “19th style English porter” as is apparently claimed by the brewer?
