Dark mild beers used to be the workers' drink of choice after a day's toil, thanks to their light taste. Times have changed, but our CAMRA gold-winning Dark hasn't. Cask-ale fanatics love it for its smooth, well-rounded character, sweet undertones and full malty aftertaste. And modern workers still reach for it after a day at the digital coalface.

Old rating from 29/10/14 - 500ml bottle from my UK trip. Pours black with a beige head. Aromas & tastes of chocolate, coffee, toffee, nuts & roasted malt. Light to medium body. Light bitter finish. Decent mild

Half-pint, cask, shared with Finn at Colmore. Ruby-black body, stable beige head, spotty lacing. Subdued aromas of slightly roasted malts, hints of dark fruits. Plain dark malty flavours, distant notes of dark fruit. Short-lived dark malty end. Easy going. (Birmingham 13.02.2023).

2/6/2022. Cask at the 35th Colchester Real Ale & Cider Festival. Pours black with minimal bubbly beige head. Aroma of caramel, caramac, milk chocolate, light roasted malt. Medium sweetness, light roasted bitterness. Moderate body, slightly oily and watery, soft carbonation. It's okay.

Bottle. Poured dark ruby brown with a small creamy off-white head. Aroma is light roasted malt, toffee, mild chocolate, slightly nutty. Medium sweetness and light bitterness. Moderate body, a little watery and carbonated. Not bad, particularly for it's low abv.

Bottle in Minehead. Chestnut brown coloured red with a greyish cream head. Aroma is nutty, apple, mineral. Flavour is rusty penny, metal, mineral, nuts. Palate is thin and chalky with mineral. Tingling carbonation. A bit thin and metallic overall.
