We’re levelling up this DIPA with an experimental hop expansion pack. Newbies Strata and Zappa attack with a fruity onslaught of passion-fruit and strawberry and their secret weapons dank resin and mint. The high scoring combo of tropical fruit and pine is delivered super smoothly via wheat and oats. Low bitterness, a solid malt base and no-holds barred hopping leaves Arcade Made top of the leader board every time.

Tumbler glass showing hazy pale gold with a finger of clean white foam.

The nose shows intense notes of sweet pineapple and hints of citrus.

The palate is well carbonated and medium bodied. Intense notes of dry papaya with a strong bitterness throughout.

NEDIPA by BrewDog, with a name reminiscent of Arcade Nation, a black IPA they created years ago. Can from the Albert Heijn supermarket in Lokeren. Snow white, thick and frothy, fluffy, lacing, stable head, hazy to (in the end) murky yellow blonde with olive-greenish tinge. Aroma of lime zest, fresh grapefruit, starfruit, touch orange water, pink pepper, dried lemonbalm, lemongrass, unripe green melon, sugared cucumber, lemon thyme, gin, Szechuan pepper. Dryish 'hop-fruity' onset, no overwhelming tropical sultriness but a more measured starfruit, green kiwi and green pear 'ensemble', sweetish but nowhere too much so (and, in fact, less so than average in present-day NEDIPA). Softish fizz, full and creamy body, slick doughy and soggy-cereally pale malts drenched in a green-fruity, zesty hoppiness with notes of fresh grapefruit flesh, pomelo peel and lime blossom, long and a bit spicy but nowhere too harshly bitter. A slight hopburn with powdery 'hop feel' appears in the end, highlighted by gin-like, bit warming alcohol. I guess some would call this lazy and uninspired, also given the current animosity of the 'hardcore' craft beer world against BrewDog for several reasons, and it is certainly true that this beer is rather 'standard' for a NEDIPA - but I have grown sick of all those overly sweet 'spiked fruit juice'-like interpretations that flooded the craft beer world a few years ago, and I welcome one that shows restraint in sweetness and a more 'natural' hop character. In that sense alone is this a NEDIPA for me, I guess.

Can from BrewDog online and drunk at home. Cloudy gold orange colour lasting white head. Dank aroma. Dank flavour. It's fine. Hides abv well. It's not huge dankness but enough. Pineapple flavour. Not thick in mouth. Some bitterness on the finish. Decent. OK.

Hazy yellow colour with thin soapy head. Lots of orange pith. Ok bitterness. Shame that it's 8%. I think the same flavour intensity and mouthfeel could be attained with a 5% variant.
