A collab between YellowBelly and BrewDog, ‘Kottbusser’ is a long forgotten beer style, being revived over the course of two brews, a sour iteration at YellowBelly and a non-sour at BrewDog. Like many Northern German styles of the 1800’s, Kottbusser was a sour, similar in acididty to its relative, Berliner Weisse. Historically it was brewed with Pilsner malt, wheat, oats and honey, so for the first sour, the team used Scottish heather honey and Wexford Blackcurrants, to create a truly magnificent brew.

330ml can. Hazy, purple colour with small to average, frothy, rapidly diminishing, pink-ish head. Earthy fruity, slightly herbal aroma, notes of dark berries, blackcurrant in particular, earthy-floral hints of honey. Taste is tart, earthy fruity, notes of blackcurrant, an earthy-floral touch of honey; refreshing but a tad too earthy and crude.

Keg at BD TH, 16/05/18. Hazed pinkish red with a decent crimson cap. Nose is sweet malts, pink berry sherbet, grains, light breads. Taste comprises raspberry pips, hay bale, hint of raspberry lockets. Medium bodied, fine carbonation, semi drying close with a light berry tang. Ok stuff.

Niet al te boeiend. Iets te zoet voor een sour.

Keg at BD Shoreditch. It pours hazy pinkish - purple with a small pink head. The aroma is tangy berry, jammy blackcurrant, raspberry cheesecake, lactic, funk, hay, earth and cracker. The taste is crisp, dry, tart, lactic, blackcurrant, dump leaves, blackcurrant yoghurt, touch of spice, hay, red grape skin, honey and light tannic with a drying berry skin finish. Medium body and fine carbonation. Good fun.
