[April 2023] Clear brown with a frothy off-white head, certainly looks the part of a classic English bitter. Taste is malt forward with just a hint of bitterness

Cask at the Hope Tap (JDW), Reading on (appropriately) St George's Day. Leaving aside the thorny issue of England needing a more appropriate patron saint, let's move into the beer. It's rusty orange-brown in hue with a lasting beige head. It tastes of red berries and stewed apple and burnt caramel and black tea and (oddly) a hint of pork crackling. It's sweetish with a moderately bitter finish. It is (appropriately) a fairly standard English bitter. Quite drinkable though.

Cask at Picture House, Stafford. Pours “bitter brown” with minimal cream head and good lacing. Malts to the fore in the aroma plus hints of traditional hops and autumn fruits. In the mouth it is slightly sweet but with a little underlying bitterness. Malts again in the flavour alongside biscuits, bran, and hints of nuts. Later on some traces of spice dark fruits and raspberries as well. Finish is slightly dry. This is decent.

Cask @ White Hart, Todmorden. Clear tawny-amber with a bubbly head. Malty with bittered caramels. Not much aroma with a mid bitterness in its aftertaste.
