We didn’t want this to be Jagged Edge on steroids. Thus rather than using the same hop combination, we chose more fruit forward hops to balance out the alcohol in the beer. The medium crystal malt adds a very subtle color and sweetness.

Nugget and Millenium hops are used to bitter. Citra is a new variety to the market that has some similar properties to Simcoe but a more pleasant fruitiness; pineapple/mango aromas mixed in with pine and cat’s pee. Centennial brings candied orange and Amarillo adds big grapefruit.

The liquid in the fermenter is dry-hopped three times- each dry hop equal in weight to the dry hop of Jagged Edge. This multi-stage dry hopping is meant to layer the different hop aromas.

The beer is fermented cool to suppress fusel alcohol development, and dextrose is added to allow it to attenuate out highly, leaving very little residual sugar. The idea was to avoid that syrupy "gumsmacker" effect that’s sometimes found in Imperial IPAs. Other than barrel aged beers, this is by far our most labor intensive and expensive beer to make. Rampage fans are legion and we believe they deserve nothing less than the very best we can give them.

22 oz. bottle, split 4 ways, pours a hazy golden orange with a small white head. Aroma of piney and resinous hops, with just enough caramel malt backing. Flavour of lightly spicy hops, resin, buttery hops, and just sufficient caramel malts. Beautiful balance with slight spice. Enjoyed this more than the average.

Bomber from Wooden Keg in Hagerstown, MD. Pours a hazy orange color with a medium frothy white head. Good head retention. Aroma of resiny and citrus hops. Big aroma... almost sticky. The taste is earthy, citrus and resin hops. Some mango and tropical fruits. Full bodied. All hops with lingering bitterness. Some maltiness is there, but it lacks character. Lingering bitterness. I’d like more balance, but I recognize this is from California, where they don’t like balance. ;)

Awesome beer. It’s not the most pungent DIPA, but the hop notes are strong enough and come through with some very nice aromas. It smells like a mix of tangerine rind, pineapple and pine needles. It even picks up some apricot and grapes, as it warms. It’s a sweetly citric, inviting aroma. And the taste is almost better. The sweetness is quite light; not much crystal malt flavor here. The finish is dry and almost perfectly bitter, in that it’s strong but never drowns out the hop notes. The aftertaste is a very long-lasting pine resin hoppiness. Mouthfeel is happily dominated by hop oiliness. Appearance is a light copper with a creamy head, white tinged with yellow. Kudos to Black Diamond for another step in the right direction.

Bomber from Nugget Market in West Sacramento, CA. Pours copper/amber with a foamy off-white head. Grapefruit/citrus aroma. Medium body; foamy carbonation. Is there malt? Yeah. Barely. This sucker is so grapefruit. Extreme. Well done. BD is definitely on the comeback trail. Kudos. Congrats.
