Bottle from Drankenhandel Leiden. Aroma is caramel, sweet brown malts, notes of toffee. Flavour is sweet with a light bitterness. Medium body. Drinks more like a Quadrupel.

Bottle, 10%. Malty aroma. Has little metal to it to begin with. Clear dark reddish brown colour. Small fizzy light brown head. The flavour is fruity and malty with some brown sugar and a little alcohol burn. Light-bodied for the ABV. Tastes good, but I expected more of a beer of this style and strength.

Barleywine by Guilty Monkey, a client brewer in Gelderland in the Netherlands operating in the kettles of De Leckere. Pale yellowish beige, open, moussy ring lacing in shreds over a hazy coppery amber beer, turning hazier and a tad brownish-tinged with sediment. Aroma of hard caramel, rusk, unripe peach, rainwater, red apple peel, pear, clove, gin, hints of fried turkey, tomato skin and cooked egg. Fruity onset, estery with sweet notes of peach, red apple and pear, softishly carbonated with full, if not sufficiently vinous mouthfeel; brioche-bready and caramelly malt sweet middle with a slight peanutty edge, under quite a bit of phenolic yeastiness (clove and some nutmeg) as well as growing breadiness (also primarily from yeast), ending with softly leafy hop bitter notes and pronounced, brandy-like alcohol which for a 10% ABV beer becomes all too astringent in the end. Lingering residual sugars (honey-like) and fruity esters. Sweet, phenolic, yeasty strong ale, not completely in balance and feeling more like some kind of 'Belgian barleywine' (i.e. an inflated and boozy sweet-spicy tripel) than a true Anglo-Saxon one. Needs a more pure malt flavour, cleaner yeast profile and better hidden booze to improve, if you ask me.

Fast gone cream-coloured head over veiled, dark cognac-coloured beer. Sweet maltsyrup nose, liqueurish, candied orange, orangezeste, wet dog. Sweetish - if with an almost bitterish, toasted, caramelly overlying flavour. Again liqueurish, again orangezeste. Finish has wheat for me. Slick, almost sticky, alcoholheat. Rather run-of-the-mill. External info places this as brewed @ De Leckere

According to the label this is brewed at De Leckere. Pours a brown colour with a reddish hue and an off white head with reasonable retention. Aroma's: sweetish, red fruit, candy sugar. Retronasal it's fruity, sweetish, yeasty, candy sugar. Flavour is moderate sweet, yeasty, a bit alcohol. Medium bodied. Fair carbonation. Finishes just lightly bitter.

Bottle. Dark amber. Sweet malts, cardboard, light herbal, dry old wood, caramel. Over medium sweet, lighter bitter. Medium bodied, a bit boozy finish. Not great.

33 cl. bottle @ home, bought @ van Rooij, Culemborg.
Clear dark brown with an off-white head. Dark caramel aroma with caramel malt. Sweet taste and a low bitter finish. Easygoing barleywine.
