Smoked Lager, also known as March Beer (Märzen Rauchbier) is a classic German product, originated in Bavaria at the begining of the 16. century. It is brewed with the addition of smoked barley witch gives it it’s characteristic taste and aroma. Many breweries use different methods to smoke the barley and they mostly keep it as a bussines secret, so we will also stay misterious about that.

Draft at #2. Cloudy, almost murky, amber color. Aroma of meaty burnt bacon. Taste has just enough smoke, not too much, with a hefty malt background. Not bad.

Ugly dull brown and hazy. Aroma of phenols and light smoke. Phenols dominate the smoke. The malts aren’t very characterful.

From tap. Pours clear and golden orange with a small white head. Aroma is mild smoked and vague butterish. Toasted malty and slight sweet caramelish. Bitter and toasted caramelish finish. Light meaty touch.

18/08 Draught at the BBF 2011. Was so thrilled to see this here! It poured clear reddish to brown body with small head. Only little peat in aroma reveal its smoked character, while it’s normally fresh herbal hoppy (they tend to use those same hops in most of their beers). Bacon, smoked meat, charcoal, heavy and robust flavor, slightly rotten, while still interesting. Herbal hoppiness doesn’t belong here, though they’re obviously present. Medium bodied with fine peat and smoked meat finish. Slightly acidic here. Nice, though crude and too heavy, but I can appreciate they even dared to make a rauchbier!

Rerate:I was glad to see this on tap at the Gospodar Jovanova location when we went there on the 29th, having liked it at the festival. I’ll keep it short. This time there was scarcely any smoke, both in the nose and especially in the taste. Not bad, but it took a huge hit, it was even slightly more pale than it was at the fest. Damn. 6/4/5/3/11 Original rating:When I saw a banner that hinted at the existence of this, to be debuted at the 2011 BBF, I was giddy with anticipation. Looking lovely in the glass, a clear dark orange-red body and a yellowish head, it initially disappointed me with the nose initially. Nicely fruity, yeasty, strawberry jam and cream - it didn’t smell smoked at all. Vary after the "IPA", I saw luttonm try and be excited about something. Maybe it was a good beer despite that? Yeah, it is, but it did taste smoky. The dominant smoked cheese taste is propped up with sweetish general maltiness and maybe some light lemon. There’s a residual ashy bitterness that didn’t help drinkability much, but didn’t take away from it much as well. Croatia should REALLY take some notes from this newly developing Serbian micro scene. Not necessarily in terms of quality, but in terms of innovation! 7/4/7/3/14
