Dark brown with thin head and fine carbonation. Aroma is woody and boozy with a touch of cherry liqueur. Flavour starts up with the cherry notes then dark malts and some coffee and dark chocolate. Complex but well balanced.

Bottle on 712 to Edinburgh, thanks to Doddy, 24/02/23. Murky mahogany brown with a beige cap that settles to a swirl. Nose is chocolate, coffee grinds, dark malts, oak, dried fruit rinds. Taste comprises mellow roast, cognac nip, spice, oak, cocoa powder, coffee, fruit rinds. Medium plus bodied, fine carbonation, semi drying close with a balanced spike of alcohol. Decent BA affair.

Donkerbruin bier met weinig schuim dat ook nog eens heel snel wegzakt. Smaak is vrij zoet en warm met duidelijk cognac, wat rozijn en een beetje chocolade. Heeft een heel zachte smaak die lang blijft hangen. Heel geslaagd.

Verzet’s output has been entertaining enough for years now, but in my personal opinion, few of their brews – exceptions notwithstanding – equal the Baby Jesus project of old school strong porters – with this one being the latest addition to that specific range, aged in cognac barrels. Pale greyish beige, moussy, irregular head breaking and lacing in shreds over a dark chocolate brown beer with hazy ruby red glow. Strong and alluring aroma of indeed cognac but also Kirsch, melting black chocolate, blackberry coulis, old wet oak wood (vanilla!), rum-soaked cookies, caramel, tawny port, green pear. Sweet, estery onset with a slight sourish edge, fruity hints of ripe blackberry, green apple and fig, medium carbonated with full, rounded body; caramelly and pecan-nutty malt core with light toasty bitterish edge, even a touch of bitter chocolate, before tannic woodiness, herbal hops and some spicy notes set in, providing dryness which matches well with this unmistakable, sweetish, warming afterglow of cognac. Rich, complex, yeasty but delicious imperial porter, just like the previous Baby Jesus variants – with this one being among the very best so far. Great work.
