Nøgne Ø Furious Fifties is a powerful Belgian quadrupel that has matured for 20 months in American sauvignon blanc barrels. The aromatic and fruity touch from the barrels has left its clear mark on this brew.

Well stored bottle @ home. Black body under a medium sized pale beige head. Strong and nice aroma of dark malt, chocolate, oak, dry fruit and warming alcohol. Taste has a fine balanced sweetness and alcohol. Dark, smooth roasted malt, chocolate, dry fruit, oak, balanced bitterness and warming alcohol. Fine balanced body as well with a very long and pleasant aftertaste. Smooth, complex and nice all over without any pastry tricks.

Not quite a "Belgian" quad but this is delicious. Kinda like a stout barleywine with more fruit. Fruit leather. Heavy but not boozy.

I’ve had a handful of Nogne O quadrupels and have been impressed. This evening it is a 33 cl bottle of Furious Fifties that came by way of a Dutch seller last year. My Trappistes Rochefort glass gets the honors this go-around. The pour is a rich, mahogany brown body finished with a slender, steadily replenished head of medium tan foam. The nose is a delight, ripe dark fruit, hard candy, yeast and the barrels making their influence known. And the drink improves on the scent. Dates, chocolate, a vinous effect, malt, a hint of yellow fruit, grain and leather. Really a fine quad. This makes a nice bookend to the Roaring Forties quadrupel from the brewer.

Bottle at Landlov, Bod. Has a dark brown colour with a small beige head. Aroma of licorice, dates, cloves and pine. Flavour of roasted malt, nuts, raisins, licorice, leather, tobacco and warming alcohol in the end. Has a slick and silky mouth feel, full-bodied and a soft bitterness. Rich but a little unbalanced. Not much from the white wine. Some cellaring would be beneficial.
