Alchemy XIV is a Summer Ale that uses wheat to provide a subtle acidity which is thirst quenching. The bitterness is low and hop aroma is mild. There is a fruity note from the yeast. This is a beer which serves as a base to then add a range of flavours through botanicals, in this case pink peppercorn.

Malts: Pale Maris Otter, Wheat malt, Wheat
Hops: Hallertau Northern Brewer (bitterness), Hallertau Hersbrucker (aroma)

(Cask at White Horse, Parson’s Green, London, 26 Nov 2011) Amber colour with brief, off-white head. Fruity, malty nose with dried fruit, citrus, resin and hints of oak wood. Malty, fruity taste with notes of citrus, caramel, resin, oak wood and a bitter-sweet finish with hints of orange marmalade. More than medium body, with a certain sweetness and a generous bitterness. Quite well balanced for a dry hopped barley wine. Very nice and tasty.

Cask at CP&K. It pours amber, with a thin beige head. The nose is syrupy, wood, floral, fresh hop and tinned nectarine. The taste is wood, golden syrup, honey, alcohol warmth, leather, nut, fresh hop, floral, plum and tinned nectarine, with a long warming, dry finish. Medium body, soft carbonation and sticky mouth-feel. Ok, but a bit thin for this style.

On tap (@The Flower Pot, Maidstone, Kent, U.K.): Clear, deep golden, no head to speak of, sherry-like nose: dried fruits, cellary and caramelly notes, wood and yeast included; solid dry bitter-sweet flavour, full bodied as expected; very vinous bitter-sweet finish: almonds, old wine, cellar, mould with hops sticking to the palate for more than 30 minutes! (this was my last beer in Maidstone, I could feel the hops ’til I reached my hotel-room!!!) Great hybrid-brew, it is hard to say, if it is a beer or a wine......

Very clear golden to orange colour with no head. Smells sweet, herbs and round. Tastes weird, lacking in taste a bit and it’s watery. Flat mouthfeel, thin body.

Cask, 9.4%. Teaish, caramelly aroma. Almost clear amber or copper colour. No head. The flavour is sweetish and teaish. Not very alcoholic, but there is a slightly rough bitterness in the finish that might be the alcohol.
