ZENNEGASH is a collab with our friends -and excellent brewers- of Allagash Brewing Company from Portland, Maine in the USA. Little side note: the first ever collab we did was with them in 2011: the Very Spéciale Belge.
We didn’t have to look far to find a name for the beer. We simply combined the two rivers we both owe our names to: the Allagash river, and our good old Zenne!

This time we brewed a wheat beer (the specialty of Allagash!), dry hopped with both American and European hops. We made two versions: one bottled version, refermented with Brett-yeast, and one clean version in kegs.

The bottled version:
A blond beer, beautifully veiled thanks to the large amount of wheat used. In the nose we primarily smell papaya, mixed with the scent of white fruit tree blossoms. Because of the refermentation with Brett yeast, we also get the typical aromas of cider and leather. When we drink the beer, we get a very slight acidity due to the wheat and a lovely creamy texture. Once again we taste papaya, but also peach and hawthorn. In the finish there’s yellow stone fruit and Galia melon. The alcohol percentage is at 5,7%.

The kegged version:
At sight, she looks exactly the same as the bottled version. But in the nose, we get an explosion of acacia flowers and especially of fruit: a mix of tropical fruits, yellow stone fruit, quince compote and melon. We have the same freshness of the wheat and the same slight acidity with a creamy texture. We can already smell summer!

330ml bottle. Hazy, yellow-ish, bright golden colour with average, frothy, half-way lasting, barely lacing, snow white head. Bretty, funky aroma, wheaty malty background, notes of mild funk, some yellow stone fruit. Taste is bretty, funky and yeasty fruity, notes of yellow stone fruit, mild funk, citrusy fruity, hoppy overtones. Watery texture, dry and minimally astringent palate, medium, prickly to lively carbonation. Mildly funky, very refreshing, a tad overcarbonated - very nice.

Drunk to make up for a disappointing wine, from a big wine glass (because I'm lazy). Straw-yellow color, moderate fine wheaty head. Nose is crisp and light brett, nice. Wow crunchy citrus flavor, full bodied, all kinds of good complexity here without overwhelming sour or tire fire notes. Really excellent experiment!

330ml bottle from Etre Gourmet. Misty yellow pour, large white head. Pleasant Belgian vibe.. bitter prickle. Wouldn't categorise it as a witbier, definitely feels more like a standard Belgian blonde. Decent.
