Smoked bock bottle, 6% ABV. Deep golden color. A bit of smoked cheese in the aroma. Malty sweet flavor with propical fruit and a soft cheesy smokiness. Sticky mouthfeel, hints of tartness. Not unpleasant, but I prefer smoked Franconian beers.

(Bottle) Reddish brown colour with frothy, beige head. Malty, smoky nose with notes of rye bread, dried fruit, smoke, orange peel and a slight acidity. Malty, smoky taste with rye bread, honey, smoke, a touch of tar, red fruit and a gentle spicy bitterness. A slight acidity coming through. Medium body, with a touch of sweetness. Quite balanced smokiness and quite well balanced. A slight acidity is a bit disturbing. Quite enjoyable.

750 c&c from Corti Brothers. Pours hazy copper with a yellow/beige head. Aroma of smoke, sweet malt and medium dark fruits. Full bodied or nearly. Flavor is moderately smoky with some sweet treacly malt and something like fig or date. Yet it’s rather fresh tasting considering the flavors. Tends to thin with time, and a little ash shows up, but it’s a very alluring ale.

Bottle of the 6% variant from Marks & Spencer, Watford. Poured a bright ruby colour with a thin, tight off white head. Aroma of cloves, berries and iodine. Smoked malt dominates the initial flavour with notes of brown sugar and spice. Finish was toasted malt, caramel and Christmas cake. Rather liked this.

Tap at Brasserie V. Big classic Bamberg rauch aroma. Not so far removed from Ur-Bock. Smooth and easy. This is a solid offering. Meaty, clean, no stickiness, just smooth raisin tinged malt. One the best Meantime beers I’ve had. Nails it.

Dear Bushwick, Brooklyn tap ($5): Pours mahogany with a tan head. Aroma is dark fruit, subtle smoke, and a pinch of hops. Taste is slightly sweet. Lightly smoked. Kind of meaty. I would have liked it to be a little more on the smoked side. Pleasant to drink. Soft body.

750 ml bottle into tulip glass, best before 11/10/2014. Pours lightly hazy deep ruby red color with a 2 finger fairly dense khaki head with good retention, that reduces to a small cap that lingers. Light spotty foamy lacing clings on the glass, with a good amount of streaming carbonation retaining the head. Aromas of wood, smoked meat, caramel, toast, toffee, molasses, pepper, brown bread, nuttiness, raisin, herbal, light leather, and yeast earthiness. Very nice aromas with good balance and complexity of malt and yeast notes; with good strength. Taste of wood, smoked meat, caramel, toast, toffee, molasses, brown bread, nuttiness, light pepper, herbal, light leather, and yeast earthiness. Lingering notes of wood, smoked meat, caramel, toast, toffee, brown bread, molasses, nuttiness, herbal, light pepper, and yeast earthiness on the finish for a good bit. Very nice balance, complexity, and robustness of dark and smoked malt flavors with yeast ester notes; and zero cloying sweetness after the finish. Light-medium carbonation and medium bodied; with a creamy and lightly slick mouthfeel that is nice. Alcohol is very well hidden with minimal warming present after the finish. Overall this is a damn nice smoked bock style. All around nice complexity, balance, and robustness of malt flavors; and very smooth to sip on. A very enjoyable offering.
