(Cask at White Horse, Parson’s Green, London, 21 Nov 2008) Black colour with brief, pale brown head. Malty, roasted nose with freshly ground coffee, cocoa and hints of citrus. Roasted, malty taste with notes of fresh coffee, chocolate and hints of smoke. Some sweetness, slightly below medium body. Nice and tasty. In short: coffee and chocolate with a whiff of smoke.

Cask, at the European Beer Festival, Copenhagen. A really dark ruby beer, clear, topped by a minimal head (read: layer of bubbles). A real head would have lifted the score. Smooth, coffeeish nose with roasted malt. The flavor follows the same path with roasted malt and coffee. Quite smooth, but one-dimensional. Thin in the mouth, finishing the same way it started. An elegant, thin, smooth and one-tracked beer that probably goes down easily in large quantities. (080912)
