Dark yellow, medium hazy body, with a creamy, white head. Aroma of pale grapes, white wine, moderate funk, some stone fruits. Tastes similar. Medium mouthfeel, with a moderate carbonation. Finishes smooth, elegant, vinous, moderate acidic, with green apple. Elegent and fresh, with lovely pale grape and white wine notes and well balanced funk from the background. Really lovely stuff! Bottle. Color: Hazy golden, white head. Aroma: Grape, tart, funky notes. Taste: Over moderate to medium tart, some moderate sweetness too. Grape, some grapeskin, oak wood, gooseberry, subtle rural funk, some hay and old hop, bit moldy. Medium body, below average carbonation. Another nice beer from De Ranke.

Medium, rather stable light yellow head over veiled orange beer, lively carbonated. Sour nose with lactic acid and fruitacids. Lambic with horseblanket, farmyard aromas dominate, but there is definitely a grapey, almost vinous overtone. Earthy lambic, undergrowth, the vinous/grapey vectors pushed into a corner. Lemony/lactic acid remain very present, no doubt enhance both by CO² and fruitacids. Straw, unripe yellow fruit, peach. Acidthinning and -burn, lipsmacking acidity, slight dry-out effect. Refreshing, very carbonated, effervescent and sharp. The combined acids are an attack on the mucoses. Of course, it's great, but the idea of "malse" lambic seems far off.

Already the third in a series of grape ‘lambics’ by De Ranke – too bad I missed out on the first two versions, which are apparently already sold out and respectively contained Chasselas Blanc and Montepulciano grapes. In this third edition, Trebbiano d’Abruzzo was used, an Italian white grape of ancient pedigree, still widely used in Italian viniculture (though often blended because of its relatively high acidity – which I suspect is less relevant in a lambic context). As for the base beer, the brewery only mentions ‘lambic’ and ‘our own aged beer’, so I assume their own Spierelambiek was used, probably in combination with ‘true’ Pajottenland lambic by e.g. Boon, as is the case in Mirakel (De Ranke’s geuze imitation). Bottle from Gastro-Beer in Antwerp, shared with Craftmember. Egg-white, moussy, slowly opening and bit irregular head, initially well-retaining but finally dissolving over a hazy yellow-apricot blonde robe. Aroma of white wine must and sour white grapes (indeed Trebbiano), green gooseberry, cooked apple, stale urine when warming up, sourdough, hint of bitter weeds, green plum, unripe pear, apricot, yoghurt, damp hay, sugared lemon juice and a leathery Brett note. Crisp, fruity onset, lots of juicy white grape effect, some ‘core’ sweetishness even but embedded in gooseberry- and yellow plum-like tartness, medium carbonated with smooth to even slightly buttery mouthfeel. Sourdoughy core, supple, under a thick layer of both lambic esteriness and actual sweet-tart white grape juiciness, with a refreshing white yoghurt streak of lactic acidity passing through; clear grape skin and grape seed tannins in the end, some woodiness as well, but the whole remains vinous, juicy and ‘summery’, with light Brettanomyces-induces ‘wild’ notes (goat stable, urine) in the background and grape juiciness in the foreground. Not as deeply noble and complex as the great grape lambics by e.g. Cantillon, 3 Fonteinen and Tilquin, perhaps, but nobody should bother about that: this is fully De Ranke soundness and elegance, layered, vinous and brightly coloured, with a high degree of drinkability. Makes me regret even more that I missed the first two versions.

Sample (thanks omhper!). Yellowish golden colour with a small white head. Aroma is funky, some grapes, mild tart wood, with some spicy tones. Flavour is floral, funky, some grapes, dry tart wooden tones with mild spiciness and some acidity. Still lovely to drink and refreshing.
