Inspiration for Victoria was found in the artwork at the Victoria Mansion where visual references to Bacchus, the Thracian god of wine, brought the idea of introducing grapes to the beer.

Brewing Victoria begins by crushing five hundred pounds of chardonnay grapes and adding them to the mash with two thousand pounds of Pilsner malt. The brew is then lightly hopped with Hallertau and finished by fermenting with a mix of wine yeast and Belgian abbey-style yeast. The result is a beer with golden highlights, a fruity nose, and a complex finish. Its beer sibling, Victor, uses locally grown red grapes, but is otherwise identical.

Thanks to the Allagash “Give Where You Live” initiative, a portion of the proceeds of Victoria goes to the Victoria Mansion in Portland, Maine.

Bottled. A hazy orange beer with a white head. The aroma is sweet spicy - especially coriander, and wheaty. The flavor is sweet malty with notes of caramel, and spices again coriander being most dominant.

Test vom 11.9.2007, Gebinde: Glasflasche Noten: 8,8,9,8,7,8 - 8,10

Fully hazy orange; little off-white head. Coriander, wet blanket or wet mop Brett (Wyeast N°...), unripe grapes. Horrible wet blanket taste, like old rags soaked in molded grains. Further alcoholic, giving some extra sweetness, but not enough to cover a sharp, burning MF. To me this is horrible and undrinkable.

Small white head. Hazy yellow body. Hoppy herbal grassy aroma, quite mild, with notes of mango and apricot. Intense dry-sweet hoppy mango/apricot taste with malty background. Dry herbal banana/mango aftertaste. Excellent! (0.75l bottle at glouglouburp’s.)

Pours bright gold into a tulip. Fluffy micro head quickly subsides to skim the surface. Dried fruit and yeast aromas. Soft, dry and chalky with typical Allagash yeast and pepper flavor. Didn’t pick up on the grapes too much. Over-priced as usual for an Allagash; but they keep selling them, and I keep buying them.

Bottle courtesy of Bu11zeye: Poured a bright yellow color ale with a big foamy head with great retention and lacing. Aroma of sweet white grape juice with some Belgian malt and some yeast. Taste is sweet with a nice mix between Belgian style malt and a yeasty finish. I couldn’t really pick-up the taste of grapes in there. Body was above average with some good carbonation and no alcohol was noticeable. Overall, this is an interesting beer but definitely not the best from this fine brewer.

Bottle. (thx to papsoe) Unclear, golden body with a nice off-white head. Sugar, fruits and some dried fruits in the aroma. The flavor has some hay and grain, but that doesn’t matter because the sweetness, fruitiness and dried fruits dominates in a lovely blend. Full body and a long, sweet finish with some alcohol. It is maybe a bit on the sweet side, but is a lovely drink. (070510)

(Bottle 75 cl) Courtesy of Rastacouere. Hazy, amber golden with an off-white head. Subdued aromas of fruit and yeast. Medium body with a very high carbonation, yeast and fruit and then nothing much more. Not pleasant. 090507
