Tripel from Dutch Bargain, the former Brouwerslokaal and a southern Dutch brewery I have known for years (I visited their brewpub a few years ago too) but never have been quite impressed with... Perhaps this Belgian style strong blonde, because that is essentially what 'tripel' means nowadays, can change my mind. Can bought at the new Jumbo supermarket in Ghent. Thickly moussey, egg-white, membrane-lacing, dense and creamy head about an inch thick over a permanently clear, warm and pure 'old golden' robe with disparate sparkling. Aroma of orange zest, ripe banana, apricot, mandarin peel, gin, freshly baked croissants, chamomile, hints of parsley, pan-fried potato slices, white pepper, rosewater, even a vague touch of lavender, clove, bread crumbs, powder sugar (volatile) and raw parsnip. Fruity onset in a cleanish way, some banana ester but not overdone at all, hints of apricot and pear, sweetish but not sweet, with a thin sourish edge enhanced by quite lively, yet altogether fine-bubbled and tolerable carbonation especially for the intended style; smooth, slick mouthfeel, white bread- and croissant-like maltiness, sweetish pale malts but not too sweet, cereally, gradually overshadowed by the Amarillo which not only adds a peppery, quite long-lasting bitterness but also a retronasal scent of dried orange peel (though not as bright as it could and should have been). Some peppery, gin-like alcohol accentuates this, but for a tripel the alcohol remains altogether fairly well in place, even though it does obtrude a bit in the end. Vague background notes of clove and rusty iron ensue. The whole thing remains clear until the last drop, so it must have been filtered, which is not commonplace for a tripel; in fact this is more a 'Belgian strong blonde' (or 'edelbier' as good old OBP used to say) than a true tripel, but admittedly the boundaries between the two are very vague to begin with. In all, it remains a bit crude and unsophisticated, and the classic Amarillo used here could have been a lot brighter and more orangey - but I have no complaints as it shows no off-flavours, does not entirely miss the point and delivers what it promises. Not a 'true' tripel for me given the lack of bottle conditioning, but a decent brew for sure, if a bit, well, boring...

16/VIII/24 - 33cl can from the brewery as a gift, shared @ my parent’s place, BB: 25/VI/26, P02541 (2024-744) Thanks to Martijn and Anniek for the can!

Clear gold blond beer, big solid creamy white head, stable, a bit adhesive, leaving some lacing in the glass. Aroma: pretty fruity, floral notes, some banana, malty, sweet impression. MF: ok carbon, medium body. Taste: a bit sweet, malty, grains, soft bitterness, fruity touch, sugary, banana. Aftertaste: gentle bitterness, banana, a bit spicy, coriander touch, fruity notes, ok but not great. And where’s those Amarillo hops? I for one can’t detect them…

Goudgeel bier met weinig schuim. Smaak is bitter hoppig en vrij zoet met iets van citrus en wat hars en dennen. Is helemaal geen onaardig bier maar heeft meer van een IPA dan van een Tripel.
