Keg at the brewery taproom. Pours mostly clear amber-gold with a creamy, off-white head. Light sweet flavour with notes of toasted malts, leaves, light ripening orange, earth, dried caramel. Light bodied with massaging carbonation. Finishes with notes of candied citrus, bitter earth and leaves, more toasted malts. Great stuff.

ESB (extra special bitter, the ‘upgraded’ and stronger version of classic English bitter as heralded by Fullers since 1971) by one of England’s leading non-traditional breweries – see what this gives… At Tilquin English Beer Festival. Medium thick, off-white, membrane-like lacing, slowly opening head, hazy deep amberish orange robe with peachy tinge – actually looking rather pale for an ESB. Aroma of wet toast, Graham crackers, mugwort, dried grapefruit peel, bread crust, dried garden weeds, unsalted peanuts, toasted bell pepper. Subduedly sweetish and fruity onset, quite clean with notes of dried peach and orange pith, medium carbonated with minerally effects; supple toasty-bitterish and rusk-like malt profile, bread-crusty, further bittered by a long, earthy, wormwood-leafy, herbal and floral hop bitterness, very Old World for sure, but also very powerful, perhaps even more bitter than is custom for, well, a bitter. Characterful and packed with flavour – it should not surprise anyone that one of the most consistently good postmodern breweries in the heart of Britain’s capital is perfectly capable of constructing a solid ESB next to all those APAs and American style IPAs.

Bottle. Pours dark, hazed amber. Medium sized creamy white head, very stable. Scent is caramelly malts, medium intense, creamy. Taste is quite bitter, way more so than current beers in the 'bitter' style. Caramelly malts in beautifull balance. Bready, refreshing and easy to drink yet so full of taste. Quite harsh (in a good way), green , herbal hoppy finish. Creamy mouthfeel, especially for being only 5.5 ABV. Man, I wish bitters like this would be more available in Belgium !

Draft @ La Tana.
