Amber ale by a brewery in the Périgord region of southwestern France, thanks Craftmember for sharing. Foamy, pale yellowish white, cobweb-lacing, pillowy and rocky, firm head on a deep brownish-tinged amber robe indeed, cloudy and darker (more brownish) with sediment. Aroma of hard caramel, unripe peach, dried persimmon, unsalted peanuts, dark green tree leaves, beech nuts, dried mushrooms, roasted pumpkin, wet clay, dried thyme, dry earth, honey. Dryish-fruity onset, apple peel, touch of blackcurrant with a light sourish undertone, softish carbonation; caramelly maltiness with dry-(pea)nutty core, bread-crusty with the bready part strongly reinforced by the yeast. Herbal, earthy, bit leafy hoppiness, bit tea-ish and bitter without overpowering the caramelliness and nuttiness of the malts; phenolic spiciness (thyme, tea leaf even) shows up, along with an extra bready yeastiness, in the end even hinting at baker's yeast. Quite yeasty for a single hop amber, needs cleaning up if the intended goal is to be achieved, but intentions aside, I did enjoy this one, as it reminded me primarily of an old-fashioned, micro-brewed and somewhat 'dirty' Walloon style ambrée, something I have nothing against. Much more a Belgian style amber than an 'international' amber ale if you ask me - whatever the latter may be.
