BA Imperial Baltic Porter 13% vol
A bigger and bolder version of Öö brewed for its 10th anniversary, aged in cognac barrels.
Taste: A velvety concoction of toasted malts, chocolate ganache and luscious vanilla slowly melt away, until delicate notes of blackberries and heather tips emerge. The finish reveals an elegant cask presentation with notes of warming cognac, dark dried fruits and refined tannins.
Appearance: As pitch black as the night sky, with a dense chestnut head.
Nose: The rich aroma of chocolate and cracked walnuts jump out of the bottle, quickly followed by a gentle touch of vanilla.
Malts: Pilsner zero, Munich, Carafa special T-2, Chocolate dark, Caramel 300, Special B, dark sugar, raisins
Hops: Columbus, Northern Brewer
OG 33° ; FG 11.5° ; IBU 30

Smell of red berries, roasted malt. Black colour, tiny dark brown head. Aroma of red wine, red berries, some tar and licorice. Intensely sour and medium sweet. Soft carbon.

Seems like it has a blackcurrant fruitiness. Sweet but with a tartness in the finish

Bottle shared at work, kind courtesy of Peeter himself. Extremely fruity, the barrels are all over the beer - so much so that the base feels a touch too subdued even, but only for as sec, because right away I find myself indulging in the barrel character again. I was all over this beer until the green apples started to show which I just couldn't disregard from that point on. Interestingly it didn't ruin the the beer entirely but it sure does stop it from being outstanding. Collab's gona be a banger tho, no doubts.

Põhjala's classic Baltic porter Öö aged in cognac barrels as a special edition in their fantastic Cellar Series; bottle from DeApotheek shared with Jo. Creamy, deep yellowish-beige, medium thick, opening head, black robe with thin copper-red, hazy edge. Intense bouquet of chocolate liqueur and chocolate ganache, toffee, vanilla from oak, actual vanilla, cognac indeed but well-integrated, cinnamon, blueberry crumble, blackberry coulis, blue plum, Sachertorte, cappuccino, hint of cassis. Densely sweet, almost somewhat - atypically - 'juicy' onset with dark-fruity elements (plum,, blackberry, ripe pear) and a very light porcini-like umami accent; soft carb, very full oily body, a tad viscous but nevertheless remaining 'drinkable' for this strength and density. Thick slabs of pecan-nutty, toffeeish, Sachertorte- and cappuccino-like malt and other flavours fill the mouth, all topped with a fat layer of dark chocolate penetrating through the whole and connecting with the vanilla elements from both the cognac and the oak wood; the first also adds a kind of dark blue grape-like fruitiness and juiciness, probably the same fruitiness I experienced in the onset of this multi-layered beer - a stroke of genius, I would say, adding vinosity and a certain 'souplesse' to a type of beer that can otherwise become very cumbersome. The tannins add soft dryness but the dark fruitiness and profound chocolateyness keep the upper hand. The cognac of course brings a warming glow, but somehow at this formidable ABV, the booziness is kept in check - a telltale sign of great mastery of this kind of superdark, superstrong beers. Roasty and hoppy notes provide elements of bitterness, again in perfect balance with the rest. Complex, layered, intelligent and intense masterpiece of a beer: this, perhaps, is Põhjala at its very best.

330ml bottle from Vinmonopolet Langnes. The oily pour reveals a deep black body, diminishing tan head, poor lacing. Attractive aromas of grainy chocolate, oak, and hints of dark berries. Long-lived, warming end, slightly roasted, and with a bite of cognac. Slow sipper, heavy to drink, very nice, a bit over the top though. (Tromsø, 10.04.2024).

Dark brown, thin head. Rich dark malt, mellow toffee, definitely some brandy barrel or something like that. Raisiny notes, date molasses, plum, I'm loving this dark fruit. Good acidity too
